The chuck on my cheap and nasty Aldi drill/driver has shit itself. First
the chuck wouldn't let go of the drill, I stripped it down and was
surprised to find that one of the major components was plastic. Now it
comes loose while drilling.

So I need a new 18v drill driver, the best buy that I have found is this:

https://www.totaltools.com.au/152150-bosch-18v-1-x-4-0ah-hammer-drill-kit-0615990j4d

I like that it comes with a 6 year warranty (if you register) and seems
cheaper than most of the competition. Bunnings, for instance, have a
Ryobi for $99 but that's just the skin and the battery and charger are
$149 extra.

Anybody got a better suggestion?

**Not me. That drill represents excellent value for money. Particularly
with the 6 year warranty. I have the bigger brother:

https://www.totaltools.com.au/18v-13mm-brushless-drill-driver

It's got Blutooth.

WTF?

Anyway, I've owned it for 3 years and it has never missed a beat. More
power than I need. I even use it with a 75mm auger for drilling holes in
the garden.

**Or, the larger, two speed Bosch drills. Like mine:

https://www.totaltools.com.au/18v-13mm-brushless-drill-driver

With 85Nm of torque, not much slows it down. Strong hands are required.

If you don't do any heavy duty drilling for extended periods it will be
fine.

Just avoid Makita. Their drills are rubbish now and their warranty
policy even worse.

Milwaukee seems to be very popular with tradies at the moment but if you
don't need anything heavy duty the Bosch should do the job.
I've got mostly Makita power tools plus a few Bosch, my small Bosch
impact driver is at least 10yrs old and both batteries are still good,
I've also got an old Bosch drill that was a cheapie, drill is still good
but one battery failed.
It comes down to how much money you want to spend, at that price the
Bosch should be very good.

My Makita drill has a metal chuck and doesn't have that problem, its an
older model that was used by my son when he was still on the tools, it
stopped working so he gave it to me, I put a set of new brushes in it
and it now works like new.

Hmm 400 bucks for a skin, and I have a hammer drill already (it's a
specialised hammer drill not much use for anything else)

Mostly light work, aluminium mainly with occasional drilling out of
hardened screws although that is a last resort, I have other techniques
that usually work.

**I think so. It's a $34.00 option. I don't need it. That said, the LED
worklight that came in the set:

https://www.bosch-pt.com.au/au/en/products/gli-18v-1900-0601446400

Had the Bluetooth option fitted. It's actually come handy a couple of
times. The light is really handy and plenty bright.

I think you need to take your own advice. but my point remains. Aldi
products are largely unsupported by service and spare parts, and are of
unknown or dubious quality, so it's foolish to buy them when there are
reputable branded alternatives that do have backup.

I've heard that the metal chuck drills are more robust, but the trouble
is that they're hard to get. Their "regular" plastic chucked drills are
fucking hopeless.

A mate has got just about the entire Ryobi range of battery tools,
renovated his house so they have been well used and he's very happy with
the brand.

The one I have was pretty expensive when new, its also big and heavy so
it rarely gets used.
Don't need to drill too many holes these days and when I do I just grab
my Bosch cheapy, its only got one battery left so when that dies it will
be going in the bin and then I will have to think about a replacement.

So do I. I tend to do a lot of heavy steel hand drilling into things
like 12mm plate, and if I just have to drill a couple of holes I'll use
the battery drill and a couple of pilot bits rather than roll out the
heavy 240v stuff. Mightn't sound quicker, but it is.

However you have to watch the auto chucks, as they slip on the shanks
easily and when they do they gall really bad and make a mess. This is
about the *only* thing I find that Makita 18v drills do really well :)

*You're* the one who was very recently whining about "relevant", so having

Alvey's insides must be eating him out now that the toxic waste
situation has been sorted and it's not going to Bacchus. I expect he and
his fucktarded mental midget mates made *many* posts about it coming
here before any decision had been made, and as usual they were shown to
be wrong at the end of the day.

Has a single one of them had the balls to put their hand up and admit
they made a bad call?

Yeah, didn't think so :)

FWIW I have a couple of AEG 18v jobs here. One is a hammer/screw/normal

and quite good and around 7 years old now. Batteries are great and fit

I thought you did. That's why I made the point mine was petrol powered.
The battery ones typically have lower output so, as a whipper snipper,
they aren't really worthwhile. I have a battery Ryobi blower and it
doesn't have as much power as my petrol powered blower. To be fair
though, had I specced a more powerful blower than this,
https://www.ryobi.com.au/garden-tools/products/details/18v-one-blower-tool-only-obl1820s
I might have had more power. That said, I use this one only to give the
garage and driveway a quick blow down, saves time, quick and easy. When
I need anything serious done, I get the petrol one out. I also had a 5AH
battery in my drill so didn't need to get another.

Couple of things Fraudster!

1. You are not fooling anyone (Deryl aside. Obviously.) pretending that you
don't read every post.
2. Unlike your desperate self, I don't speak for anyone else when I say

4. Bumhole will be a toxic site while you're still in it.

I'm sure they are. I know a couple of people who have them and they
swear by them, but they *are* pitched at the "handyman" segment of the
market. Whether that makes them inferior to the "big players" like
Milwaukee, Bosch, DeWalt and Makita I can't tell you as I haven't used
enough of them to make an honest comparison. But I do know that very few
tradies seem to use them.

Not that that means anything either. I have a few "Ozito" power tools
here which all come with a "For domestic use only" warning label
attached to the power cord and which were largely bought to be
sacrifical lambs, and I can't kill the things even though they've had a
massive workout :)

Went and bought the Bosch drill, but shouldn't have gone to North Lakes
on a Saturday morning when the entire population of Brisbane were trying
to get to the Sunshine Coast. Registered for the 6 year warranty, just
the usual stuff name, address, ATM pin number, date of the last time you
had sex and partners name (alvey would have trouble with the last bit).

The drill is good reasonably powerful, and has a neat feature, the nose
of the chuck doesn't have to spin with the rest of the chuck so you can
steady the drill by holding it when you are trying to exactly position
the drill.
