I have been working with some friends to fit a 904 Torqueflite behind a
Hemi 265 engine. The Hemi is the non-torqueflite block but the t'flite
bell housing has been modified to take a Hemi (supposedly . . .).

I will not go into detail but suffice to say this is a conversion that is
FRAUGHT WITH DIFFICULTIES and minor/major problems. I would warn anyone
wanting to attempt it, DO YOUR RESEARCH and get in touch with me with any
questions. DO NOT BELIEVE the suppliers of conversion kits or bell-housing
modifiers because it is not as easy as made out and success is NOT
guaranteed. There are problems with:

- correct alignment of the gearbox. Misalignment will result in a snapped
flexplate. The guy who modified our gearbox stuffed up the welding and
you guessed it, snapped flexplate. You
cannot substitute another bell housing because it is a one-piece casting.

- - choosing a torque convertor with the correct number of ring-gear teeth
for your starter, depending on whether you want to use reduction or V-8
starter, and correct internal splines for your gearbox. There are several
choices available and correct choice is essential. A V-8 torque
convertor cannot necessarily be used because some Chrysler V-8s are
externally balanced.
- Fitting the starter motor. It shifts from "top" to "bottom" and WON"T
clear your aftermarket extractors,
they will have to be modified and finding someone to do it may be a
problem; (no-one makes extractors to fit Hemi with Torqueflite )and you
will have to cut a chunk out of your block to allow
for the starter to bolt onto the gearbox;
- Wiring for reverse lights and cut-out switch will need to be
modified if the Torqueflite is replacing a Borg-Warner, or if you're
replacing a manual gearbox;
- Finding the right flexplate. You will need a flexplate from a Slant Six
that was matched to a Torqueflite. Neither the Hemi-Borg Warner NOR
V8-Torqueflite flex plates will work.

Mail me with any questions.

I was under that impression too. Most are fitted with BW35s but I'm sure I've
seen a 727 behind a hemi six or was it a slant?
