OMG was a scrap metal argument! This guy hasn't driven a performance car in
his life...

And to say that the market is targeted at young males?!?! HUH? Show me
someone under 30 with 50 grand to throw at a car.

What a wanker!

The only half decent arguments come toward the end of the article, such as
the call for traction control to be fitted across the FalCom range, and the
arguments about how power can actually be a safety feature in itself.

The rest of the argument is fairly stupid. For example, he points out that
the BA has twice the power of the EA. This is only true if you compare it
with the EA 3.2, which was an engine practically nobody ordered in their
EAs - in fact, it only lasted six months before the 3.9 became standard
(with 120kW or so). He also completely fails to mention the fat that both
cars have put on since the EA/VN days - both cars have easily gained
200-300kg.

The most insipid, condescending and frankly offensive argument comes from
that self-important ideologue described in the article as "Kim Rennick",
from some no doubt two-bit company operating out of a caravan in someone's
backyard who would like to think of themselves as "automotive consultants
Autopolis", who have taken upon themselves to decide that people who happen
to enjoy a bit of action when they flex their right foot in a car are "red
blooded, or totally unsophisticated", and apparently if you like horsepower
it's because you have a penis length problem. And then there was this gem:

"Ford and Holden are appealing to a mindset which is anti-chardonnay and
anti-latte."
"The cup-holders in both cars should be able to hold a can of Foster's."

How delightful of Kim to assume that people who want to drive something more
substantial than a New Beetle or a 318i are therefore complete redneck
morons. This sort of attitude really, really shits me - it's the whole
"what I like is better than what you like" thing, as if people who like
latte and chardonnay are innately superior to people who like beer, and fast
cars. Kim is probably the sort of person who lives in a "charming, darling"
terrace house in a basket-weaving suburb and packs a cut lunch and a compass
when she goes to visit the Western Suburbs.

Well call me unsophisticated, but I think I'd rather hang out with people
who like fast cars and beer, thank you very much.

Rant over now.

Marco,
feeling persecuted.

How do you refute arguments like that? Invite all V8 owners in aus.cars to
post their penis length measurements? Conduct a survey of car ownership vs
preference between beer and latte? The entire basis of this Kim character's
arguments is basically, that people who like performance cars are bogans.

even then, it's a few years late... in terms of power:weight, the BA sin't
that much better than my EF!!

and to add to that, the BA will put its power down better, not to
mention out handle the EF. In fact, regardless of power/weight, the VN
Commodore was a dodgy in the way it delivered its power.

Given that the criticisms were nothing more than ad hominems and character

Yeah - no need to ruin a good cup of coffee with sugar.

Dunno about the *always* black part though - a nip of Baileys is nice.
Even the Cadbury's chocolate (alcoholic) drink is nice in coffee.

Yes - I am disappointed in Volvo for that, just as I am disappointed
that BMW put 1.9 and 2.0 engines in 318's in recent times. Bloody
hell, it was always such a good idea to me, and they screwed it all up
to trade on the model name (or so it seems to me).

The more I think about it... the idea is still stupid. I like
