I have a 1979 CM Regal SE with 265 Hemi with stuffed Starter Motor, I
was offered a Starter Motor from 245 Hemi 1976 CL ute Cheap. Are they
the same or did Chrysler change the Starter Motor somewhere between
the CL to CM
Series as I was told years ago. I really need your help. Thanks in
advance, Merv Stent
Providing that they came out of a vehicle with the *same* gearbox yes they
are.
Chrysler/Valiant had a nasty habit of changing the number of teeth on the
ring gear. Easy solution is to count the teeth on your starter motor (IIRC
9 or 10) if they are the same number then it will fit.
Cheers TT

It's more fun to insult everyone.

I put a 265 into a 245 CM. The starters was not changed. IIRC there is a
hole in the automatic gearbox housing which supports the starter front
bush-housing. Both engines were driving thru a BW auto. You'll have no
problem.

As others have mentioned, the only part that might be different is the
pinion (count the teeth). If the pinion and its clutch (they come as
a unit) in your original starter is still OK it's no big deal to swap
them over if you needed to.

I'm not sure what the pinion count is, but you can _easily_ pick the
early and late starters by the _length_ of the pinion, one is a good
4-5mm longer than the other. If they both _look_ identical you're fine.
If that's sounding vague, let me know, I'll upload a picture of each to
some webspace.
