ummm im not so sure about the 4M, but for example the 18R range of
engines had the following variants:
18R = pushrod 2.0 litre 4 cyl carb
18R-C = overhead cam 2.0 litre cyl carb
18R-G = double overhead cam 2.0 litre 4 cyl carb
18R-GE = fuel injected etc etc
18R-GU = emission controlled etc etc
18R-GEU = emission control and efi etc etc
18R-GTEU = turbo, twincam, emission control, efi etc etc
and so forth

my advice would be to fit the standard 4M (whatever engine that is...im
not familiar with it at all - i assume its in a cressida or some such?) as
the emission control is obviously not standard equipment and therefore not
necessary. i only say this because emission control reduces power a lot in
these older carb fed engines.

also, another option would be to fit a later engine in the same line, like
a 5M (only about as good as a 4M i assume) or 6M. any engine in the 7M
range (ie 7M-GE, 7M-GTE) would be very good, but also expensive as wiring
etc would need to go in for the computer system (maybe also for 6M series
too). however, the standard (non turbo) 7M-GE produced about 142kW out of
the box, and had decent torque. turbo obviously gets you more...around the
175kw range i think.

Bryan,
The 4MU engine is basically the same as the 4M that you will remove. The U
suffix denotes that the engine has emission control on it. You may find
that it in fact has an air injection tube which screws into each port on
the inlet side of the head. If this is the case I suggest that you cut each
tube just before it joins the main tube and crimp it over and seal it off
with Stag exhaust jointing paste or similar. The U suffix also denotes that
the engine SHOULD have an electronic distributor. I say should because over
the years I have seen many U suffixed engines that are running a points
distributor.

I would however suggest that you check with the local road transport
authority before doing any modifications to fit the engine.

Jason,
A small correction in your stats. The 18R engine is not push rod. All 18R
engines are overhead cam engine chain driven with twin chains.

You have the coding worked out but unfortunately Toyota never built a
turbocharged 18RG, not even for the world rally championship. Having recently
built one myself though, i can say Toyota missed an easy opportunity to have
an awsome performance motor in their range. We had to wait until the 3SGTE for
something really special.

I'm not sure if there is a difference but the U means its fitted with
the Japanese emissions package.
