Hey everyone, my isp hasn't carried usenet for years now, I've only just recently found time where I might be able to participate in aus.cars again to some extent. Thing is, whilst it 'works' google groups isn't ideal. I much prefer a dedicated newsreader (used to use netscape 3 well into the late 2000s) or more recently thunderbird, for the way it organises posts/threads etc.

but that means i also need to connect to a server which google doesn't have the option for.

I remember a while back some people here were using a server - possibly from Germany for around $10-20 per year. Does anyone still use that and if so could they provide a link to the relevant site to pay/get access? I think I've found it here:

http://www.individual.net/

But I just wanted to make sure this is/was the right one. Dropping 10 Euros won't kill me, but I'd rather find out if they carry aus.cars and update posts regularly before commiting to it.

Yes, that is the one and it covers aus.cars.

There is also an Australian server which is free of charge
www.ausics.org that covers certain Australian I.P ranges. They will
add yours if not already supported if you ask. It's also the fastest
news server (for me at least).

There's also news.aioe.org, which requires no account and you can use
immediately, also free.

There are others, but that should be enough for you.

I use it, they carry aus.cars and I have never had any trouble
connecting to the server. You have probably already noticed that they
don't allow attached binaries but I have found that to be an advantage
because it eliminates a lot of spam.

Hi John,
If you don't have any success with those options you could always change
ISP.
I use Internode and one of the main reasons is access to a news server.

thanks for the replies everyone. I'm currently giving news.ausics.net a
go at the suggestion of Jeßaus, and if that doesn't work out I'll go
with the berlin one. In a sense this post now will be the litmus test
for what happens next :)

Internode alias's to Astrawebs news server.

A subscription to Astraweb is pittance, and the beauty is you get access
to both the US server, and the eu server, so if one goes tit's up, the
other works. The EU server is the best of both. Another bonus is it
allows remote logins, whereas Internode dont.

www.astraweb.com 180gb for $25... you can download a shitload of text
for $25, unlimited time! :-)

news.eternal-september.org is free, is a bit tricky to get going, you
have to register with username and password, and then perform more tricks
to get it going.
If you do decide to use it http://www.eternal-september.org/

Should do the job for you, especially if you're only after aus.cars.
