I like to listen to fairly standard rock music,

e.g. Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac,
Backstreet Boys, Midnight Oil.

What I don't like is JJJ's attempt to give non-standard stuff
a "fair go", meaning that 90% of it is unknown crap.

So on my 6 stations I have:

101.3 C-FM (it appears I can receive central coast)
101.7 Classic Hits 2WS
104.1 2DAY-FM
104.9 MMM
105.7 JJJ
106.5 MIX-FM

The frequencies are definitely right, not dead sure about
the station names.

Anyway, any suggestions on what to replace JJJ with?
I'm not interested in ads, news, or DJs rabbitting on about
what they had for breakfast, just music. I continually
change stations to try to get a song that I know of. This is
a stop-gap measure until I change cars, and hopefully
technology will have increased so that I can put a DVD
packed with MP3 songs, which at 64kbps should be
about 160 hours of music.

Actually I could probably make do with a normal CD,
which should give me 22 hours.

Hell, when memory prices hit something like $49 for a
256 meg stick, it looked like I might be able to get a
pure memory system. $150 worth of memory would
have been enough for me to download all those songs,
and my car battery can keep the ram refreshed.

But currently prices for car stereos is pretty ridiculous,
and I don't want to make my car a target for thieves
either. Hence suggestions required for radio stations. :-)

JJJ is all about giving new stuff a chance, it always has been. Your taste
in music is getting older by the day, while commercial radiostations keep up
with current trends to a degree to get the most listeners. Triple M usually
plays all the music you listed, but apart from that may i suggest buying the
limited type of music you like? or downloading it onto a cdr if you are that
way inclined?

How else do you get to know about new music? All music is new at some stage.
The Silverchairs, Grinspoons and Living Ends of this world were all unknown
once.
JJJ ain't perfect but it's as good as radio gets in Sydney.

And it looks like you missed Nova 96.9. They play a lot of US type shit but
it's ok sometimes.

Pity, it sounds like your too far away to pick up C91.3, they are a clone of
triple m of the late 80's early 90's. Even have the same D'jays Rob
Duckworth and Stewart Cranney. From your list Stones,Floyd, F mac and
Midnight oil get plenty of airplay, also anyone of my vintage (36) would
also enjoy chisel, dire straits, dragon etc who are all on high rotation.
Its definately my station of choice at home, and as far as I can pick it up
in the car.

In case you don't know the "C" is for Campbelltown, and they have researched
their market well because it is an area full of young families and the
playlist is directed towards what mum and dad used to listen to.

JJJ is almost as commercialised as MMM, just with
more inept announcers; which is why it can afford
to keep going, I suppose.

MMM wouldn't play most of the above any more.
They hardly play enough Floyd, no Fleetwood Mac at
all, hardly any Stones, and fortunately they've
never played the Back-entry Boys ...

Surely a combo of 2WS (for the old mellow shit),
2MMM (for the old louder shit) & 2DAY-FM (for the
gay & girly shit) would suit.

Bummer I can't pick it up then! I've always been
interested, as my best mate from high school's
wife works there as a newsreader ... but it
doesn't get as far as the south-eastern suburbs.

Sounds like you have all the main stations tuned in that play the same
music, at the same time, every single day of the week, how exciting... If I
where you I would find a frequency that only broadcasted hisssssss and tune
that into your 6 station at least then you would know what to expect.

I thought variety was the spice of life? why not tune into something that
has a few different programs and listen to some (real) metal, jazz, indi,
classical or maybe every some bluegrass. Me, personally, speaking for
myself, I'm sick of hoping into friends cars and hearing the same top 50,
current crap. You need to broaden your musical exposure and make the music
that isn't standard become at least standard for yourself.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Since the age of about 18,
I already know what it's like to be and old fogey. :-) Actually, I
threw in "Backstreet Boys" as an example of something that I didn't
know of when I was 18. :-) I was having trouble remembering
the names of some modern bands. Melanie C has a song I like,
e.g.

Right on, you young whippersnapper!

> I thought variety was the spice of life?

No, quality is. And it doesn't get any better than AC/DC's
"Rising Power", or Rolling Stones "Gimme Shelter".

Crap.

Indian (Hindi)? Crap. Indy Car Racing? Crap (oh wow, how
exciting, the blue car just overtook the red car). Indiana Jones
theme tune? Can't remember.

Crap.

I don't smoke weed (or cigarettes).

> Me, personally, speaking for
> myself, I'm sick of hoping into friends cars and hearing the same top 50,

I want to know what your friends' cars are tuned into,
rather than a freak's car.

> current crap. You need to broaden your musical exposure and make the music
> that isn't standard become at least standard for yourself.

Crap. Anyway, got two frequencies to try out next time I'm in
my car: 91.3 and 96.9. Thanks everyone. Incidentally, the
stations currently in my car were preset when I bought the car
new. 2.5 years later I'm decided it was time to figure out how
to tune it.

Actually, I was forced into that decision because one day I
was swapping stations, and I found that C-FM and MMM
had the same song. Later on, I found the pricks had even
got the ads in sync too, deliberately to piss me off. But after
a bit more MMM/C-FM simulcasting, I found that MMM
announced "C-FM", and I knew there was no way in hell
they were going to simulcast that!!!

Turned out that I must have been on C-FM, then pressed
the MMM button for 5 seconds, which tuned the station!

So a bit of stuffing around and I got MMM back. And I
thought it was time to do something about the dead
station JJJ, which has only ever once had something I'd
ever heard of on when I tuned into it.

BFN. Paul.

Well, tried it today. 96.9 had some psychadelic crap on,
and 91.3 (Campbelltown, no problem receiving in my
area (north)) had a mainstream song on it, so hey presto,
I've finally got my 6th station and I'm happy! :-)

I have trouble with it in some of the flatter parts of Liverpool, but there
have been many places on hills further away in sydney where I have been able
to get it.

But yeah, it is pretty good. Not my first choice, but it's good.

So who else thinks that Men At Work's "Down Under"
should be our national anthem, to make it the only
national anthem that "really rocks" at the Olympics?

I don't know why everyone insists on really boring
anthems. As Neil from the Young Ones said "Oh
crap, not this band, they're always on" (as the TV
station came to a close and the Queen's band came
on).

96.9 Nova 96.9 Sydney is a mix between Triple M & Triple J (quite a lot of mainstream music, lowest
quota of ads in Australian commercial radio)

I agree with your JJJ comments - but hopefully that will change now that the Drive shift has changed
hands (comedian Charlie Pickering, & Dance Queen Nicole Fossati [ex alchemy])

Nova is certanlly my choice when im in Sydney (but i do switch over to listen to the Chaser on MMM)
