The 2 litre "Pinto" engine we saw in Cortinas and Escorts apparently has
nothing to do with the 2.3 litre motor they put in the Pinto in the USA.
I can't remember the story about why it's called the Pinto motor, but I
do remember they're different.
I am pretty sure, however, that there was a 2.3 litre version used in
the UK in Sierras, and these are the injected ones that you see the
manifolds off (which you can stick on a 2 litre motor for adding
injection).

hmm...dunno. i dont think the US version was actually the same as the UK
pinto. i think the name was borrowed or coincidence....
in any case, wasnt the UK version a 2.4 litre? i HAVE heard of 2.4 litre
(UK) pinto (very rare) which shared the pinto block....heard of, but dont
know much about...

I am not sure of how similar the two motor are..... but they both come from a
South American design ..... an agricultural motor ..... ever wondered why the
cam comes out the back of the head ..... it was never intended to be put in a
car.

In the UK there were two version 1600cc and 2000cc. The 2000cc can be stretched
to 2.8 litres if you try exceedingly hard.... but for the same money you can
probably get a Hart 2.4 litre motor (based on the BDA) that will deliver more
HP.

The 2.3 is a bored and stroked version of the European 2.0 sohc motor
and was 1st used in 1971 in the Ford Pinto, hence the name, in a
rather sick move it also became the base motor for the 74 Mustang II
and Ford initially dropped the V8 Mustang altogether!!!!, it pumped
out a massive 88bhp.
It 'official' name is Lima, which keeping with the Ford tradition, was
the name of the engine plant it came from, the 429/460 V8 was also
called Lima confusingly, so I guess the Pinto name stuck.
In the early 80's it was available as a carby turbo in the stang which
was called the Mustang TRX - named after the Michelin TRX tyres it was
marketed with, I nearly brought one of these a few years back, but
couldn't bear the thought of having a 4 pot Mustang!!!
In around 85 it was available as a EFI/turbo/intercooled donk in the
Mustang SVO and T'bird.
Aparently the best one to get is the 82-85 motor as it had a better
breathing head. Somewhere around their is a Listserve for Pintos where
you could ask more questions, search for Pintos in Yahoo or AltaVista,
that where I found them a while back.

Back in 1989 a friend had a new Granada (front looks like an EA) that
was a 2.0 EFI when I was living in London, I don't recall a 2.3
though, they did have a 2.3 V6 floating around though.

A couple of years back (probably 4), I asked the same question, and the
responses I got
seem to indicate that the 2.3 pinto had a slightly larger bore and stroke than
the 2.0.
Some of the responses I got seemed to think I was talking about a 2.3 that was
released
in the US with pushrods, which was obviously a different engine.
Sorry I can't remember the exact specs, but hey it was a long time ago!
I think the best way to find out is to post a message in rec.autos.tech asking
for info on
the 2.3 pinto engine and see what you get back.
