Just wanting to compare these vehicles, as I plan to make a return to the
blue oval sometime in the foreseeable future.
The wheelbase of the Fairlane appears quite a bit longer than that of the
Fairmont. The boot looks larger, and rear legroom looks to be slightly
more. Is this correct?
What are the major differences between these two cars, given that both are
available in leather, with all the fruit? What about running changes
between models?
I really just want a porn-star cruiser with heaps of room, features and
leather. Not sure whether I'd want a V8 or not yet.
Do the I6 Fairlanes have enough get-up-n-go power?
What are the consumption/power figures for the I6 and V8 engines? Does the
extra weight of the Fairlane equate to significantly higher consumption
figures (over the Fairmont).
Which is the better buy at the moment?
TIA.

Not compared to the EFII/EL Fairmont Ghia. They are also heavier.

Yes but the Fairmont Ghia has the XR6 engine so fuel consumption isn't
that different.
>Which is the better buy at the moment?
The Fairmont Ghia (series II EF or EL).
It has more features, leather standard, Tickford engine standard,
Tickford Touring Suspension standard, LSD standard, better stereo
standard, 6 stacker, better trim and a lot of other little things.
The equivalent of the Fairmont Ghia in LWB is the LTD. The Fairlane is
the equivalent of the Fairmont. You pay all the extra for a slightly
longer car.
IMO the Fairmont Ghia is much better value but then I'm biased.

The Fairlane & LTD are both based on the longer wheelbase of the Wagon. Have
been for years. Rear legroom is increased as is the luggage capacity of the
boot.

The EFI6 Fairlane has plenty of get up & go. Although the car is designed
with comfort in mind, if you give it a bootful it will rise to the occasion.

The Fairlane also gets the XR6 engine, but in the larger vehicles (Fairlane,
LTD) the V8 reportedly gets better fuel consuption, especially on longer
trips.

OK, So the Fairlane misses out on the Touring suspension, instead getting
SLS (Self Levelling Suspension) & the leather is an option. The rest is the
same. In fact, apart from the legroom, you'd be hard pressed to tell the
difference between the two inside.

Funny that, but I coulda sworn that the Fairmont was axed with the ED. Only
available models in the EF/NF were the Fairmont Ghia, Fairlane Ghia & LTD.
But yes, you do pay extra dollars for extra legroom. The EF/L LTD is only
available as V8 Standard (EFI6 Extra cost Option)

The stock Fairmont (non-ghia) survived for the EF Series - I own one. I
think it was retired for the AU, when the Fairmont Ghia became the only
choice.
And yes - it has plenty of get up and go though is a bit plasticky.

Absolutely not. The Fairmont as I said is the same spec as the
Fairlane Ghia. The Fairmont Ghia is the same spec as the LTD.

DUH. I said NOT compared to the EFII/EL Fairmont Ghia. The Fairmont
Ghia came with the XR6 engine, different suspension and weighed less.
What part of that do you want to attack now.

The Fairlane DID NOT get the XR6 engine at the time the EFII etc was
around. The Fairlane does not now get the higher output engine but the
Fairmont Ghia DOES as it did on the EFII/EL.

The Fairlane DOES NOT get the premium sound system. Does not get the
LSD. What part of what I said can't you understand.
SLS is a wank.
And how many Fairlanes had the leather option, SFA. As he's buying
second hand he's going to have a hell of time finding a leather model.
You do realise don't you that the EF/EL are no longer current.

Wrong again.
The Fairmont is still available.

The LTD was cheaper with the 6 but you had to order it.

Well you've made a big enough fool of yourself.
Show us where apart from the longer wheelbase the Fairlane is a better
choice then the Fairmont Ghia. You can't because you're an idiot that
wanted to flame me for my opinion on the car.
You didn't even know that the Fairmont is still available and always
has been. I would have thought that a taxi driver would have known
what specs Falcons are.
Next time you want to flame me at least try and get some facts right.
So the Fairlane was never available with the HP 6 ?

So the Fairlane didnt come with LSD? I thought it was standard on the NA
Fairlane onwards?

Yeah you are, but thanks for your help :)
How much should I pay for a good EF Ghia?
How about an NF Fairlane?
Are LTD's worth all that much more?

You wouldn't buy the EF Ghia as it came with 50% leather, no XR6
engine, no passenger airbag and a few other things missing.
The EFII Fairmont Ghia should set you back somewhere from $20k to
$25k. I don't watch prices too much as it hurts to see the
depreciation.
>How about an NF Fairlane?
No idea.
>Are LTD's worth all that much more?
If you want LWB IMO yes over the Fairlane. But I wouldn't consider it
over the Fairmont Ghia unless you need the LWB, the Fairmont Ghia is a
better package. (again imo before Darren tries one of his weak
attacks.)
Oh but I do know there's a Fairmont model Matthew. I never once disputed
this. I also know that the model was dropped around the time of the EFII /
EL. And I do know a little more about the upper market Ford range than you
think.

Everything you posted was not correct. If it were, then the NL Fairlane that
I own does not have an XR6 motor, nor do three other NL Fairlanes that
friends of mine own have the same engine. If you want to get pedantic then
yes, I am using the term Fairlane to mean Fairlane Ghia.

Read what I wrote again wanker. I answered the guy's question. He wanted to
know if the EFI 6 Fairlane had enough get up & go. I made no mention of the
bloody Fairmont. For a car the size & weight of the Fairlane, it has plenty
of get up & go.

Read what I wrote above dickhead. If the engine in my Fairlane is not the
XR6 engine, then I've got a bloody good case against Ford Australia, as do a
few friends of mine. I suppose you're going to tell me next that the EL
Fairlane never came out with a Tickford engine / suspension option??

Dunno what brochure you're looking at Matthew, but that is definitely the
Ford Premium Sound System in that there dashboard, and that's definitely a
Ford badged Pioneer 6 stack CD player in the boot. And the diff IS a LSD. I
can understand the specs of my car Matthew. Can you understand that you're
wrong??
> SLS is a wank.

I never said it wasn't. I was merely pointing out some of the differences
between the two cars. I might also point out that the SLS is an expensive
item to get repaired / replaced, so on some second hand cars it has been
removed & the rear shocks/springs replaced with heavy duty ones.

Yes I do realise that that model is no longer current. So long as you
realise that you're a wanker. And there are plenty of leather model
Fairlanes around. Thats what buying second hand is all about
Matthew...Getting what you want for the best price. If one dealer doesn't
have what you want, you look elsewhere.

Yes, it was returned with the AU due to customer demand. But we aren't
discussing current models are we. NFII/NL saw the dropping of the base model
Fairmont & Fairlane. Yes, that's right, the EF model range included a
Fairmont, Fairmont Ghia, Fairlane, Fairlane Ghia & LTD. The EFII lost the
Fairmont & the Fairlane...only the Ghias & LTD remained.

If you read the original post the guy wanted a "porn-star cruiser with heaps
of room, features and leather". So if that's what he wants, then the
Fairlane is the better choice. So you have to shop around a bit. You do that
when looking at second hand cars anyway.

Nothing wrong with my facts. You should brush up on yours though.

Awwwwww, sorry to disappoint you Matthew, but like I said in my previous

The Fairmont has been available since the XR in 1967 - AUII 2000 !!
Kieron
Darren, please, please ;-) , the Fairmont was never dropped - a friend
of mine who is a Ford new car salesman has the last of the EFII
Fairmonts sitting in his driveway and my boss recently traded his
early build EL Fairmont on an AU Fairmont.

I don't recall the Fairlane ever having the HP6 motor, I thought it
came standard with the V8 and the std. 6 possibly being an option at
reduced cost and prbably not taken up by anyone.
The only factory sporty Fairlane I recall was the Concord and the one
I saw (driven by the Johnson family when over for the ATCC) was a V8
and if i'm not mistake the 185kw version.
To work out what was and wasn't available on the Fairlanes just give
Fords 1800 number a call and ask them to fax you the original Ford
sales brochures, you can also use this number to find out what
options/specs a particular car had by giving them the VIN.
BTW - Just make sure you specifiy the EFII brochures as the specs
changed.

A friend of mine drives a Fairlane Concord it had the XR6 engine, nice
car but the rear seats were to hard on my back.

Fairmonts have been an option all the way through. My step father in law
owns an AU1 Fairmont.
Dennis
I tried to convince Dad to get a 6cyl Concorde instead of the AU
Fairmont, but I think he decided it wasn't his style! :-) It had the
162kW 6, and the 8 was teh 165kW version.
There have also been a number of "Sportsman" specials in NC-NL models,
with XR6 engines.

Hmmmm.... maybe Matthew isn't the only one who shouldn't throw stones.... :)

Sitting in my work carpark on most days reside a EF Fairmont (read no
Ghia), a EL Fairmont (read no Ghia) and an AU Fairmont (once again, no
Ghia). The last place I worked at had an EL Fairmont Ghia so I presume
that the Ghia exists as an EF and I have seen AU Fairmonts and Fairmont
Ghia's.

Oh god..... I can't belive I'm going to defend Matty but well stranger
things have happened. BE TOLD! there are EF, EL and AU Farimonts and
Fairmont GHIA's as separate models.

Yep, it was the Fairlane that got dropped.

You are both wrong. The Fairmont survived the EF, EL and AU series and still
exists to this day (AUII), see:
