*None* of the Asian utes are "safe". Safety is relative, and the only
difference between the best and the worst of them is the varying levels of
"unsafe". The Toyota Hilux is regarded by many as the best ute on the market
(not my opinion, but anyway...) but it's safety is piss poor compared to
even the most basic sedan.
If it were me, I wouldn't be as worried about safety as I would about
reliability and longevity, as the Chinese are yet to show they've mastered
anything in those areas. Especially when they're in control of the business
and not some foreign multi-national.

You wanna pay $2 and get better ones? Go ahead.
Chinese stuff is often cheaper and inferior quality, because its bult to a price not a quality. If
the Utes are made to a cheap spec then they wont last. I bought my kids a Chinese Quad bike and its
been great, starts every time, runs well, sure its no yamaha or honda but for what I paid for it its
fantastic. If I want the quality I must be prepared to pay more.
> Chinese stuff is often cheaper and inferior quality, because its bult to a

That's kinda obvious, no?
Virtually everything the Chinese make is built to a price, and that price is
generally four fifths of fuck nothing. The thing that seperates them from
most of the the rest of the world is that they have virtually no regard for
quality.

Which is true for just about everything.
At the end of the day when your Chinese quad bike shits itself and you
decide to replace it, it won't be so cheap compared to the initially more
expensive opposition, but then as you say you knowingly put price before
quality.
Everybody pays, with the difference being that some pay now and some pay
later. Buy quality equipment and you pay now. Buy cheap shit and you'll pay
later. At the end of the day paying less today generally means you'll pay
more tomorrow.

I consider your "dumping" proposition to be immoral and

You are proposing to do that so as not to "lose' money aren't you.
The sin of non-disclosure. Nasty.
Second hand Chinese quads are worth nothing because people know that they

Yeah. But can't ya trick-em-up and find some fool named xyz to
buy 'em?
That's OK ain't it?
;-)
No no no, if I buy at a good price and sell at a similar price while the item is still in good
condition thats being smart.
I do not concider it DUMPING at all. If I sell it when its fucked and do not tell the buyer then
thats not a right way to deal. If I buy an item on sale for $100 and that item has a $150 RRP, I
keep that item for 6-13 months and sell it for $150 then I do not lose, the buyer gets an item at a
reasonable price and everyone wins.
Check Ebay out 3 weeks before Christmas! People pay stupid amounts for them as long as they can be
delivered prior to Christmas.
I did it last year, bought in January, sold 1 week before Christmas, I actually made $50 and the
kids had a quad for the year. I didnt intend on making money but with a starting price of $50 less
than I paid for it and the nature of auctions I came up trumps. Fully intend on doing it again this
year.
I'd not sell them if they are fucked. Id rather take the hit and sleep at night.

Fair enough.

I think the Chinese *can* make some good stuff, but only when they're
supplying the heavily supervised labour. Not when they're designing and
building an item themselves. This shows up easily when you buy "brand name"
stuff made in China compared to stuff of completely Chinese origin.

Probably, but then it'll most likely still be going strong when your 5
Chinese cheapies are dead and buried, and you won't have had to put up with
the continual replacement.
Like you said you get what you pay for, and it's the incredibly ignorant who
think they're going to pay a little and get a lot when it comes to Chinese
made gear.

Careful you don't get burnt. Auctions being what they are they're totally
unpredictable, and just because you did well once doesn't give you any
guarantee that you will always.

There's nothing wrong with what you're doing. The whole world works on the
principal of off-loading equipment before it becomes a liability, and the
used buyer is acknowledging that in paying a discount price for the
equipment. If you were to falsely advertise a known defective machine as
being "good" then you'd be asking for trouble if you sell it to the wrong
person, but you certainly wouldn't be the first person in the world to go
down that path.
Generally, the rule of Caveat Emptor applies, in that it's up to the *buyer*
to ensure what they're buying is fit for their intended purpose.

Uncaring brute. :-P
;-)
We can only hope. Can one pray to Karma?
Some things you can't put a price on - safety being one of
them, so I wouldn't consider this course of action with
something like a motor vehicle.
Also at the same time I have no problems paying more for
quality - but it annoys me when the cheap crap becomes the
only option.
Back to my example of screws, there might be good quality
ones around, but neither Bunnings, Mitre 10, nor Home
Hardware stock them. So instead of paying a couple of
dollars more for decent ones, I get the cheap shit, and
swear and curse. There are many products where the cheap
chinese version is becoming the only readily available option.
A few years ago I was working in a machine shop. Our steel
and aluminium supplier was initially supplying Australian
made, but after a few years apparently a lot of the sizes /
grades were no longer available in Aussie made, and so were
substituted for Chinese made. There'd be all sorts of
variations, no two pieces of steel of the same grade would
have the same hardness or strength. You'd get a piece of
hard chrome bar that would be as soft as BMS, or vice versa.
It really was a crapshoot what you got.
I remember clear as a bell one day machining a piece of
aluminium and making a fairly large cut when suddenly all
hell broke loose. My tool smashed, the lathe made some
horrible noises, and the piece bent up and started thrashing
around. Killed it and discovered that cast into the piece of
aluminium was a nice, shiny & hard ball bearing.
Their products seem to be made down to a price with little
or no regard for overall quality. Considering the Great Wall
utes are damned cheap... Well you should be able to work out
the rest.

:Now ask yourself this question - if the gooks can't even
:master making something as simple as a screw, what makes you
:think they can make a car that is any good?
I reckon they're quite capable of manufacturing quality goods.
Well, some items at least. I'm sure if they were given sufficient
motivation, they'd catch up to Japanese quality real quick.
But why should (or would) they, when most people buy according to price
alone? We demand they produce crap, so they give us what we think we
want.
Keeping sorta on topic:
(try to ignore the photoshopping and journalistic license)
http://www.chinahush.com/2009/10/21/amazing-pictures-pollution-in-china/
Thats why you have a start price. Its not worth doing if I lose too much. I dont mind selling to
upgrade if it costs my slightly but if Im lucky I wont take a huge hit on stuff. Your right though,
its all gamble. A game worth me playing though.
I have a freind who does the same and last year we had a bidding war on both quads. Aint
commercialism at the festive season wonderful? Dont know why people dont buy things like these mid
year and store it until Christmas, its lot like the warrentee would hold up anyway!
If the chink utes are built anything like the piss excuses for chinese
buses, I wouldn't touch a great wall ute with a barge pole.
You can pray to whatever the fuck you like but it's not going to help you
one iota ;-)
From what I've picked up in the industry, I wouldn't touch one.

**Funny you mention that. A few years back, I needed to put some shelves up
in the garage. The guy who built it must still be laughing. The frame was
constructed from Aussie hardwood. Ironbark, I suspect. The garage was nearly
50 years old, so the wood was good and hard. Anyway, I drilled some suitable
holes and picked up some coach screws from Bunnings (ca. 13mm). After I tore
the heads off three of the things, I went to visit my specialist screw
supplier. He took one look at them and threw the sample in the bin. "Try
these". He said. They were four times the price of the Chinese ones. I
couldn't break them, no matter how hard I tried. Aussie coach screws rule.

Frankly I'm going to wait and see before I cone to a conclusion. I've had
the oppertunity to look in detail into their manufacturing operation and
these guys aren't amateurs regardless of what prejudices some Australian
observers have for the Chinese. The seeming shortcomings of the current
models reflect similar aspects in many Japanese sourced utes so I'm not
seeing huge differences in that area.
As for quality control and warranty issues the importation is being handled
by ATECO who have a good reputation for product establishment and back up so
that shouldn't be an issue.
Frankly up till a couple of years back I wouldn't have considered a Korean
car, but being involved with parts supply and repairs on them (mainly Kia)
in the last couple of years I've reconsidered that position and if or when I
decide to retire the Kluger a Kia Sorento would be very high on my shopping
list.
I learned then not to judge a vehicle by where it was built, so in that
respect I'm going to wait and see what happens with the GWM cars and utes
and keep an open mind about them.

Deevo
Geraldton Western Australia
Would you care to elaborate on that or is this just another anti Chinese
comment?
Hi Deevo A Gero Laddie ! Will be up there on Monday til Wens at the
Science summit :)
Have had a neighbours great wall . And BTW Punt a Hyundai Sonata
about all over Midwest
right up to Carnarvon WONDERFUL vehicle not a spot of bother
in 100,000 K (in 18 months)
Well this great wall kit is ok for the value I guess but it handles
like a cow heavily aflicted with mad cow disease .
Staggers into and out of corners
suspension dynamics just horrible even allowing for a 4wd
Transmission whines like an Avon Sabre (7000KM on the clock)
weird throtle lag ?
Brakes -what brakes !!!!!
BUT fit out is ok but not much safety compared to more expensive
alternatives
which given the cheap purcahse price is understandable
Hooked up a load not heavy (plastic water tank on car trailer)
Think giant drag chute
not too bad but just feels all wrong even compared to same load on
a series 3 landie
and the ride about the same :)
Your statement about comparing to where Korean products were a few
years ago I think is VERY fair and spot on
Even though cheap as chips at the moment would not part with the
dollars .
However, as you say ATECO are no fools and sure the feedback is
getting back to the manufacturers
Will be intersting to see how this make evolves (it has a lot to
like also )
But needs imo say 4 or 5 years of future evolution Just like Korean
products did .
But not a happy marriage of bits especially the suspension and
passive safety aspects
and Oh My Goodness ! The brakes ------------ truly lethal The
owner was in the vehicle
and said wring it's neck and lets try various unbalancing tricks on
dirt and tar on the clay pans as well.
Now normal people would in everyday driving not do what we did .
But such out of shape and ham fisted inputs can and do happen in
emergencies
We comapred it to a new Tojo
Disco 3 years old
and Misti 4wd 4 years old (also horrible)
All drivers swapped and did the same tests (frustrated motor writers
out here I reckon)
But we need to watch our pennies also
Taking price into consideration have to be fair and give it 3 stars
out of 5
But for Gods sake fix those brakes (it may just be THIS vehicle)
But faded to no brakes at all after 2 crash stops Chinese pads
smell awful BTW
So may be just the brake materials not the vehicle
Radio and speakers not too bad
Seats -us big fella's not happy at first very comfortable but after
crash stop
passenger seat was a bit skew whiff ( 110KG owner sitting in it and
only seat belt saved him from wearing the dash)
Bolts on rails came out looked like the bolts never done up in the
first place as found bits floating about under the seat ?
OK for St Georges Terrace tractor though but out in the real
world out here NO WAY .
One GREAT thing though was the air conditioner and dust sealing
IMPRESSIVE given not a speck got in time will tell however on that .
Corner of windscreen BIG blind spot due to the metal in way when
seat right back .
Left hand Mirror weird optics ?
and glass fell out (given that were had just given the poor thing a
hammering) so no big deal warranty will fix that
Picked up the bits that fell off and the Mirror still intact :)
Back seats Horrible uncomfortable could feel the metal bits on
left side
Rh side very good ? This is weird on its own .
Drums like crazy (as do many others ) with rear windows down when on
the move
So for the dollars you get something that does the job looks sort of
OK
and imo as long as you dont hammer it and drive super defensivly and
can avoid hitting something
(as you should any way)
These things will find a market and perhaps a new Niche .
What they will be in a few years on resale who knows .
But IF the Chinese get the bit between thier teeth like the Koreans
have
and evolve vehicles same as Korea and Japan before them .
Then watch out -
Oh I Forgot the fan belt broke :(
That can happen on any thing I suppose but not a a new car .
Although happened on a brand new Holden Commodore ute last year
almost at the exact same spot .
HTH One caveat .
I am NOT a mechanic I just drive the things
Cheers
.
I already have (at least been a passenger in one for a lengthy test drive)
and we went over bitumen, gravel and soft sand and apart from being a little
underpowered the ute seemed to handle the conditions reasonably well )it was
the 4x4 2.4 model). Time will tell if the long term reliability is there
but till they become more established I'm keeping an open mind.

Very wise in my opinion.
I think the Chinese are going to be capable of great things in years to
come, but they're not *quite* there yet. Their biggest problem, in my
experience, is quality control or to be more precise the complete lack of
it.
--
Regards,
Noddy.
A look at their culture and regard for human life will give you an insight
to their quality control. My experience with most Asian cultures and their
regard to another human life is "So what"
The biggest problem is the sheer volume of people in these countries all
competing for limited resources, if a few die in unsafe cars then that's
more for those still left standing.
While I have never been to China I have a few friends who have and the
horror stories they tell about traffic accidents and peoples complete
disregard for those involved would make a hardened tree hugger curl up and
cry like a small child for days.

At this point in time the biggest problem with Chinese built vehicles is
their crash worthiness, the video of the crash test should turn anyone
off buying one.

And what did the manufacturer / dealer do about these issues? If the answer
was nothing then I'd be concerned.
Just for the record we had a BMW 1 series come through work last year with a
jammed seat belt, turned out it was twisted on installation. Acting on
behalf of the distributor we repaired the fault under warranty.
No different to other utes. None of them can claim to be 100% safe.
Again the most important safety feature of any vehicle is the nut behind the
wheel.

Horses for courses, if I were in need of a cheap workhorse I'd consider
them. All I'll say on the matter is that I'll consider them on their merits
and performance in the market, not prejudge them on where they were built.
Have you had a good look at the American cars lately?
Funnily enough I was asked it I would start as one (car salesman) quite a few years ago as they had
a terrible rep as rip off merchants and needed a bit more creed. I figured that the woeful sales
wouldnt make for a good salary so declined.
They went under around 6 months later.
Honestly Driving in Mainland China is an experience that should be
missed
I assure you.
Even the supaer highways which at first look impressive have a few
design flaws
Example when last there a bit of natural selection took place
1 Top Line Audi went by us at warp speed
Bit further up the line what was left of it was under a truck
Re ended the truck at warp speed .
Bits had bounced over and cleaned up traffic coming other way
More Carnage .
Not one bit of any idea of first aid skill was observed
and because of the highway construction no off /on access for EMS
for 80 km !!
and no way for emergency services to to get access .
So more people died as a result .
so what you say below I agree with 1 million%
> While I have never been to China I have a few friends who have and the
> horror stories they tell about traffic accidents and peoples complete
> disregard for those involved would make a hardened tree hugger curl up and
> cry like a small child for days.
Also given the MANY accidents we saw
as soon as the gawkers think no one is looking they start goung
through
the deceased belongings and then hit the toe weird to see and
distressing to be honest
One thing that struck SWMBO and Myself was the woeful lack of
Knowledge or any idea as to triage or first aid .
In one HUGE pile up ( not a day went past when we did not see
some sort of wreckage ) And when they come unstuck
its a biggy as the maniacs keep the foot down trying to gain a few
car lengths when they have to stop .
This causes even more prangs further down the chain
In one incident along comes a vehicle with Chinese and English
PARAMEDIC AMBULANCE all over it
but about a 5 watt poofter siren that no one could hear But great
light show all the same
Out Jumps 2 blokes with white coats and Stethoscopes around neck
Trot up to this poor bastard with Chest and dreadful leg injuries
and head injury They wrapped a gauze bdandage around his head
and left him on to the next one
who was obviouslyof a higher rank and sort of only a cut finger (by
comparison)
(You know mother) she wentslightly birko and we grabbed kits out
of the ambo and worked on the other poor bastard
( passenger seat occupant was already dead)
made stable and intubated the the badly injured chap got a drip
going .
And guess what they took the lesser injured official in the ambo
first ! Bastards!
The other thing we observed is the complete lack of even awarness or
compassion for the peasents
They just drive into or over them in some provinces .
I am no God botherer but a lot of these bastards In Mainland China
are devoid of compassion or empathy and filled with only greed and
position .
So happily call them Godless lying murderous ^&*&%#
You have no idea the trouble I got into when I wore my Free Tibet T
shirt
Was not the smartest move over there I tell ya .
SWMBO now refuses to go back on principal .
Taipei on the other hand
is just fantastic . Different attitudes to the poor and
unfortunates etc
attention to detail and filled with a lot of very smart but not
greedy people .
I reckon what ever your friends say to you about PRC they most
likely are not even touching
the more sadder aspects of the joint .
So much so that we chucked out every thing made in China and buy
nothing
that has a made in China label Except HK and still fly on Cathay/
Dragon if no other option .
But back to the great wall vehicle another reason not to buy one
until PRC does something about its human rights issues
That does not make the vehicle any less interesting from a technology
stand point .
Very different from most utes in 2009, the GW utes crash performance is
like other utes crash performance 20 yrs ago.
None of them can claim to be 100% safe.
No such thing as 100% safe but the GW vehicles are a very long way
behind most others.
>
> Again the most important safety feature of any vehicle is the nut behind the

Agreed.
>> No doubt Chinese vehicles will get better over time but I certainly won't
>> be buying one for quite some time if ever.

> Have you had a good look at the American cars lately?
American cars always had quality issues.
