I've got a 99 VT Commodore and it wont start when cold. If I leave it
for 5 minutes with the ignition lights on, it'll start... its as if
its waiting for something to warm up. So each morning I put the keys
in the car turn the key so the dash lights up (but not turning it
over) leave it. If I come back after 5 minutes it starts.

It starts first time everytime warm.

Any idea what's wrong?

Does it crank and not fire, or just nothing?

New plugs helps the VL cold start.

Leaving it with the ignition on before starting should give the fuel pump
time to get into action?

I dunno really, I have a carb'd car with mechanical fuel pump so its a
little bit more simple (but no less frustrating on cold mornings!)

correct. it cranks but does not fire, but if I leave it 5 minutes with
the ignition lights on it will crank and fire.

Sounds like you are letting the fuel pump prime the fuel system. My VT
super6 does it too but I only need to leave the ignition on for about 20
seconds, or I crank it that long until it kicks over. My problem appears to
be the check valve in the pump letting the pressure drop from the lines over
night. If your car is taking longer before it'll start it might pay to check
it out, sounds like there could be something else going on.

5 minutes? What about 20 seconds, does that work too?
