Do PTFE additives for gear oil work?

I know its a bad idea to add PTFE to engine oil because it clogs up the
filter, but what about for gearboxes/diffs? Do things like Nulon G70 and
Slick50 work? I've got a bit of transmission noise and gearchanges aren't
what they used to be.

Thanks in advance. Any advice greatly appreciated as always.

I have used the Nulon product in a very worn gearbox in an old
XP falcon with excellent results. I rebuilt the box with new
synchros and needle rollers and added the Nulon to the recommended
oil. The gearbox worked much better and was quieter than it was
previously. I would use it again in an older gearbox.

Maybe more to do with the rebuild than the Nulon...

see the following site.

I replaced the synchros etc. in an old XL Falcon gearbox once, and also had
excellent results (without the Nulon). Did you try the box out after the
overhaul before adding the Nulon?

I've had a bit of a look on the net - so far the verdict on whether PTFE
works in manual transmissions seems to be "maybe". Might be better if I just
replace the existing oil. Possibly with synthetic?

Thanks, Matt. I certainly wouldn't use it in the engine, but it looks like
the jury is still out on transmissions. The adverse effects might only occur
if the PTFE is heated.

I heard somewhere (don't know how true it is), that PTFE is the slipperiest
dry substance know to man, but it isn't slipperier than oil.

Greg.

Thanks for that, Greg. I think I'll try a synthetic oil first, and only try
PTFE if there is no improvement. Whatever happens, I'll let you know how it
goes.

PTFE on PTFE has a lower friction than ice on ice.

Here endeth the trivia.
