Help, I've asked friends, car dealers and searched the Web.

What fuel consumption can I expect from the following vehicles
(assuming good cond.)
Urban Long Distance
Petrol Patrol SWB 1982 L28 (2.9l?)
Diesel Patrol SWB 1982 (3.3l?)

Petrol Pajero 1984 2.6l SWB

Jackaroo 1984 LWB

Could you also email any response to me at

and...@omen.com.au

Any advice on purchasing such vehicles would also
be appreciated. (Looking to spend about $8k in Perth, WA)

Okay, I know about good Pajeros, you will get about 14L/100km in the city
if you drive it with a brain and the carby hasn't worn out (very common
$600 problem), on the freeway you can get down to 10L/100km, but once
again you have to cruise at about 100-110kph to get this. If the car has
a weber + extractors fitted consumption will be much higher (a 32/36 weber
is way to small to feed a 2.6L engine with even a mild cam)...Best option
is to convert to EFi (just have to pull all the gear off a magna) and you
will be able to achieve good consumption with excellent power...a
aftermarket caby like a 34/38 Weber woulf be a minimum size to use on
these engines.)
Oh, the worse I've ever pulled in a Pajero is 23L/100km towing 800kg and
carrying about 500kg around town at the same time...
You can pull 10L/100km on the free way even when fully laden, but not
towing :)

Sounds pretty optimistic to me! That 2.6L motor in the Magna uses
the same amount of petrol as the 3.8L V6 in the Commodore (ie. it's
hopelessly inefficient and a total dog). A 2.6L 4 cylinder in a
(guess) 1800kg (unladen) 4WD is a recipe for poor fuel economy and
a gutless vehicle.

The diesel Patrol (yes, it's a 3.3L six) will have the best fuel
economy of those 3, and the best towing capability and the best 4WD
ability. Forget Pajeros altogether.

Besides which, if you're worrying about fuel consumption then you
shouldn't be looking for a 4WD.

Dave.

have to be the better choice, as the 6 cylinder Nissan engines (2.8
Petrol/3.3 Diesel) are very reliable and just seem to go forever. The
diesel would use less fuel, but may be costly to maintain, and should
have similar performance to the petrol. The LWB 2.8l Petrol Patrol is
gutless though. (Dad had one for about 10 months, it was auto and just
hopeless, especially for towing the ski boat and compared to the V8
Bronco he had before it. He traded it on a 5.9l V8 Jeep Cherokee, much
better :-) )

The 2.6l 4cyl Mitsubishi Pajero would use as much fuel as the Petrol
Patrol, and be less reliable. They have a bad reputation for
reliability. Don't know much about the Holden/Isuzu Jackaroo, its a 4
cylinder (2.0l ?), the LWB was still a 2 door, and not real big either.
