I have just purchased a VS Commodore V6.
I have only done 950 ks. The fuel economy is 11.67 litres / 100 ks. 85%
of the driving
is on the highway at 100 kph. Is the fuel consumption ok? What sort of
economy could
I expect when the car is run in.

Sounds about right for when running the car in.
On a good highway run you can get it down to around 10L/100kms.
Normal suburban crawls will see it rise to 14-15L/100kms depending on
the weight of your right foot.

Surely it's going to be better than this; we used to use my friends'
Dads' XF non-EFI Falcon when driving to Queensland (ok, ok, back then we
had nothing else to use!), and it generally used 9 L/100km overall. And
my father's XF EFI used to do 13L/100km around town - which I considered
terrible.

Come to think of it, he only uses 13L/100km of LPG in his VR around
town; so surely you could get better mileage off petrol? Or are these
numbers for fanging?

About right - my VN V6 (170,000kms), still gets 13/100 by the trip computer
which I once tested to be quite accurate and I do like to plant it a lot. On
the highway I get about 9.5-10 depending on the foot - My parents once drove
it to Musselbrook and got 8.8 the round trip, althoug it was a few years back
and had less kays on it.

If you check out the article by Barry Lake in Motor magazine regarding
fuel consumption, you will see that driving styles can vary a lot.
E.g. if I dirve the commy exclusively then fuel cons drops to around
13L/100kms, when my mum drives it (and its the same sort of distances
and time) then it rises to around 15-16L/100kms. She simply doesnt
drive as economically.
Short trips are the worst, with av. consumption being well over 20 and
even 30L/100kms on a very short run, not allowing the engine to warm
enough etc etc

You might think you're driving it economically, but you're not!
Either that, or there's something wrong with your VS (more than
the things that come wrong from the factory that is!).

My dad gets 11 - 11.5 city driving and 9 on the highway out of his.
That's going by the trip computer thingo (it's a V6 auto Berlina).

Dave.

I owned a 1995 VS Series 1 Acclaim for 42,000km before trading it in
December 1996, my average city use was 12.9 l/100km. On 100 per cent
highway trips averaging 100-110km/h, my average was 8.9 l/100km. On a
trip to Queensland last year, my average was 9.1 l/100km. My average
speed was 105km/h with some stretches sitting on 130km/h.

I had a VR Series 2 previously and averaged 13.2 l/100km or 0.3 l/100
worse than the VS.

In comparison, I now have a Holden Astra GSI which is averaging 9.0
l/100km in city use 7.0 l/100km in highway use.

For the size, the VS Commodore is a fuel efficient vehicle.

I did a run from brisbane to sydney and back again about a month ago in a VP
commodore. averaged about 9.7L/100Km for the entire trip. (2100kms)

'round town I'd get 13-14L/100Km, depending on how I drove the car...

It's now over 20 years later and I own a VS manual 1995 ute, I'm getting 19L/100km round town, lots of stop start on 26km round trip to work n back. I admit I have a heavy foot at times.

Wind resistance is the biggest killer of fuel economy. A low trailer
below the airflow line around a vehicle won't impact much. A high
trailer, on the other hand, .....

so what are car makers doing? churning out bigger higher vehicles
(SUV's). duh!
