Anyone familiar with the finer points of an EDIC motor?

I don't even know what "EDIC" stands for, but apparently this
is a mechanism that is responsible for shutting off fuel if
low oil pressure is detected, and when things are going wrong
can basically cause an engine not to shut off or not to start.

On rare occasions, I have experienced the no-shut-down problem.
However the real issue for me now is I can't get it to start.

Some people say the EDIC only comes into play once you've
finished cranking the engine. *Then* it may decide to shut it
down. What I'm getting is no cranking at all, except one
almighty *CLACK* sound coming right from that area, then total
silence.

The vehicle can be push started (or tow started), but the key
is giving me no joy whatsoever.

Engine has plenty of oil.

If you watch this video of some guy starting his 2H, from 0:06
to 0:09 you'll see a little "arm" in the bottom left corner go
backward then forward. Mine goes all the way forward and then
all the way backward again as soon as I hit ignition on (not
trying to crank yet).

Don't know if that's significant or not.

Sounds like a starter, or starter relay problem. Have someone cycle the
key while you stick your head under the bonnet and listen to see where
the clicking comes from. Once you locate it, give it a tap with a hammer
or something (don't beat it to death) and see if that causes some
temporary relief.

If it does, replace the starter and/or relay.

Like Noddy said I'd be looking at a starter issue especially the starter
relay.
If you easily access the starter use a piece of wire to directly connect
from the battery to the small terminal on the starter, if it cranks then
its an issue with the circuit between the key and the starter.
I had the exact same problem with my BJ40 Landcruiser, a bad starter
relay was stopping the starter getting full voltage to the solenoid, the
way around it is to wire a new relay into the circuit so that the
starter always get full battery voltage when you turn the key.

Tap the starter motor with a hammer. If it starts after tapping it, the
starter is the problem.

If not:

Do you have a test light/multimeter and some jumper wire?

Thank you. It was the relay. Actually it's the relay *and* the
fact that the wire going to it is the wrong gauge, so it's getting
nothing like the juice it should be getting.

I'll fix this up on Monday when things are open for business.

Yep, that's what I'll be attempting on Monday :)

There is no end of Landcruiser owners online who went straight out
and got new starters and/or solenoids, only to have the problem come
back the next week.

Yep, tried that. In fact I'm now the Dave Lombardo of under-bonnet
percussion.

I do have quite a collection of light globes. I'll remember that
for next time.

Lol :)

That was the part time occupation of anyone who owned a Ford with a
"Clapper" starter :)

Easy to believe but they could have saved themselves a lot of money and
trouble if they had researched the problem first, its a common enough
fault on older Toyota diesels.
