My VL turbo auto gearbox is having trouble upshifting so I am looking to
replace it, and to go to a manual box.
I welcome any experiences other readers have had with after market and
other non genuine manual boxes on this car.
Or even just any suggestions!
Thanx,
BuggVL.

Hi,
Listen just remember the VL 6 cylinder is a Nissan motor, so I would
check wreckers for either a 1986-1990 Skyline or VL Commodore and throw it
in.

My Skyline as a manual box, that has a better feel and shift now (ten years
after manufacture) than most Korean cars have.

While you are looking if you see a complete EFI system Computer, Air Flow
Meter, and O2 Sensor could you give me a bell. From Mount Isa its
impossible to find anything to keep my car going...

Good luck,
Michael Cummins

I spoke to a gearbox and diff guy in Newcastle the other day about
converting my non-turbo auto VL to a manual and he said it would be a prick
of a job. Do you drive with the power button in or out under 80k's? A
respectable dyno guy who owned a turbo and went through 3 boxes was telling
me how he stripped a box to see exactly what the button does and reckons
having the button out ( power mode on) under about 80k's is much better for
the gearbox and will help it last a bit longer.
This is only what I've heard, I don't know much about it myself, if it helps
at all good, if not, stiff.

...

A number of gearbox people have said this, including ones that have no reason to
lie (the guy next door's VL Calais with 180,000 on the clock had had no gearbox
problems, and the mechanic servicing it told the owner it was because he drove
around without O/D enabled, except on the highway) . Were you given a reason?

Yeah, the guy told me it was less harsh on the gearbox while changing gears
for some reason and that it will help the gearbox last a bit longer.
Basically it helps reduce wear and tear I guess.

I have had to replace my VL non-turbo 5speed just recently.  The turbo box
is slightly different, but really shouldnt matter to much if you want to put
it in.  This should not be to hard a job, and Mal Wood Automotive in Warick
Qld supply and fit them.  However when Mal did my gearbox, he told me that
this box is a Nissan one, and not as strong as something like a Toyota Supra
5 speed.  He quoted me $1050 for the Nissan box supplied and fitted, and
about $1900 for the Supra box supplied and fitted, including conversion bell
housing, tailshaft, crossmember, speedo cable ect.
Hope this helps

Yeah I eventually decided to go for the supra box.( about $1800 fitted, a
serviced used box)
I was going to go for the T5 world class/world series box but by the time i made
my mind up it was gone!! ($2400 fitted BRAND NEW) and there were no more at that
price.
I hope the supra will handle the power/torque especially as I start modifying
the engine and turbo!!! otherwise i will be very upset!!!
