Got a question on the idle on a vp v6 3.8

just replaced the inlet manifold gaskets due to it stalling and sucking in
air. all went well
now there's a small problem the idle sits too low, about 500 rpm should be
around 750 rpm

this thing has all new electrics except the MAP/TPS/IAC/MAT sensors.

ive noted there's a base idle screw but im hesitant to touch it as its
factory set any ideas on something i may have overlooked?

I dont believe it to be a vacuum leak because that would cause it to run at
a higher idle

I guess it might be the fuel pressure regulator, or IAC valve

Thanks everyone

dave

Sounds like you need to reset the base idle and then go through the relearn
procedure.

Do not touch the base idle screw, it is not for adjusting your idle speed,
only the base idle speed which can only be set with the ECM in service mode.
The base idle speed should be around 550rpm.

Did you clean the throttle body and IAC? Did you do a relearn?

To do the relearn is simple and you can try this first...

Pull the engine fuse for 30 seconds with ignition off.
Put the fuse back in.
Start the car and hold the revs to 2000rpm for about 15 seconds.
Let the engine idle, in park with all accesories off for 30 seconds...
Put the transmission in Drive (with foot on brake!) and wait 30 seconds...
Put the trans back in Park, switch on A/C and wait 30 seconds...
Put trans in Drive (once again, foot on brake!) with A/C on for 30 seconds.

Go for a spin, idle should be normal now barring some problems I have
mentioned above...

Hope that helps,

Clockmeister.

what we do at work is clean the throtle body with carby cleaner and the idle
control motor. then place you finger over the idle bypass valve and if it
stalls then you will need to reset the idle with the screw. then do this and
when you relaese your finger of the valve it should idle up then slowly
down. if they doesnt work try crc in the valve and try again and couple of
times. if this doesnt work you might need a new iac.

That describes exactly how NOT to do it...

hate to upset you but this is how we do it and i work at a holdne dealership
. yes you can get the tech 1 computers to try and reset it but it takes time
and most back yarders dont have access to the tech 1's

Thanks guys, just a question about the tech-1, i thought the ecu in the vp
was only able to output data and not recieve it through the aldl connector?
caus ive made an interface and got software for the laptop but its a one way
data stream i know the vt > can do this

The ECU in the VP isn't user programmable because it does not have an
EEPROM.
To program VT+ you do need a hardware key. Which software do you have?

Most backyarders fiddle with the base idle screw to set the idle speed. Most
people at Holden dealers should know not to spray the IAC pintle with CRC
and would know how to perform a simple relearn.

I was talking about doing it properly...

Any details online? I'm dying to build another hardware project ;-)
