Hi All

I'm in the market to buy a new mid-size car. At the moment I'm
thinking of buying the Mazda323 Astina.

I was wondering if anyone could share with me their knowledge of the
pros/cons of this car. Should I be looking at something else?

Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers
L

Ummm, some words on Astina. And Shades.
Seems to me in my driving experience that Astina translates from
Japanese as 'Arsehole'.
And Shades translates as 'Shithead'.
Quite reliably.

So, ask for one without the naming convention applied if you're a
half decent driver.
Of course, if you ain't, no worries then.

Incidently, an acquaintence did manage to buy an Astina a few years
back. He let his young son drive the thing, and the tyre wear on the
front was major-league, no matter what alignment tricks were
applied. Only conclusion was that the thing had about twice the
power it needed to yield decent mileage from the tyres.
And Mazda should be hung out to dry for not allowing camber fiddles
on the front. Hyundai did in the Excel, so what can be difficult
about that?
There ya go - talk to owners of similar formula cars FIRST - and try
to match you driving style to the results. I know it's difficult,
but simply walking up to someone at a servo or shopping centre and
asking does yield results that may be informative.
Might save you agro later. (Especially from people like me who
simply won't give an Astina an even break in traffic, and who are
continually proved correct in that initial assesment)

But given the experience of the Ars...whoops...acquaintence with his
323, *I* woudn't buy one with *your* money.

I recently sold my 1999 323 Astina (hatch). Having had several different
cars in the past, I can say that the Mazda was the best value for money I
ever owned.

I am yet to see a car that was given so much attention to detail and design.
Mechanically, in three years I did not have a single problem with it. The
only drawback it had was that for a 1.8 l engine it appeared a bit sluggish,
compared to say Nissan Vector which I owned prior to buying the Mazda.

I would have never sold it, but I wanted to buy a 4x4... :-)

I think the current model 323 is a pretty good car. I would bargain hard as
they are about to replace it with a new 323 range (Mazda3). Wait for the
runout models. They are now offering the 1.8 for the price that you used to
get the 1.6.

I could never buy the old model if a new one was about to come out. Unless I
had been driving a 30 year old car around, I guess even the old (last years)
model would seem fantastic.
