Well, had a garage session today (in the lovely pouring rain that passes for
post-xmas weather in melbourne) on my friend's 300zx tt... a total of 3
different tyre brands on his ride. The rear tyres were the same, but each of
the front tyres were different yet again!

If nothing else, it's not a great idea, 'cause you'd think the different
tread patterns would give different amounts of grip and all its subsequent
sequelae.

As for the 300zx... it's getting 4 new boots for the compliance/roadworthy
thingies when they roll around :)

the tyre can be different brands or tread pattern but must be of the same
size.
that includes profile and width. front to back can be different

Sure it may be legal but certainly *NOT* recommended.

I don't know who told you that, but it is a load of crap!
As long as the tyres have sufficient tread to provide adequate grip and
water dispersal characteristics is does not matter what tread pattern
they are. How many of you have a spare wheel which is fitted with a
totally different make of tyre to those fitted on the car. I know I
have!

In Victoria both tyres on the same axle must be the same brand and pattern,
as well as size.

ie: For a car you can have different patterns/brands/size on the front than
on the back, but both front tyres must be the same, and both rears must be
the same!

Any proper RWC should knock you back if the same axle has a mix.

This is all very well but can you explain WHY?
I mean what difference does it make if I have 4 tyres, all from
different makers, all brand new, all the same size, with 2 on the front
and two on the back? So are you saying that if you have a puncture you
have to replace the tyre with the same brand, same tread pattern as the
other tyre on the axle? What happens if its an obsolete pattern? Are you
going to dump a perfectly good tyre? Any more crazy laws like that
there?

Hi...

I'm not too sure about the legalities of it, but I think that logic would
tell you that it is better to keep the tyres on each axle the same.

Later...

In NSW you can not get a vehicle passed for rego if you don`t have the same
tread pattern . It is also classed as a defect by the cops.

Okay, let's do some comparisons here on prices in general.
What is the average price you would expect to pay for, say, a common
radial tyre size of 155 x 13" including new valve and balance?
(I will need the exchange rate of Oz dollars to UK pounds for this too!)

That equals out to what I paid recently for five new tyres, came to
AU$243 including balance and new valves. Roadhog brand if that means
anything. I also got five new Morris Ital steel wheels 4.5J x 13" at
just AU$13 each. So I got five new road wheels for a grand total of
AU$308, which can't be bad.

Could be interesting when a tire fitter swaps the nuts over and hits it
with a rattle gun.

Not a good idea as it would make the car unroadworthy.
