I recently bought an 87 Camira, and after picking it up and showing it
to a few frriends they told me that Camiras are known to have probs with
the gasket.. is this true? (Wish i found out earlier!) What other probs
do most caamiras have?
Thanks,
Fei
A mate of mine bought a two owner 87 Camira (JJ) and man, you name the
part, it failed.
here is a list of what went wrong:
Gearbox leakages
Electric window failure
Trim falling off (not installed correctly from factory)
rust in firewall (check carpet under your pedals)
leak in windscreen
clutch wore out far to fast (went through about three clutch plates)
automatic choke failure (used piles of gas)
blown head gasket far too frequently
CV joint's wore out far too fast (went through two sets in a year)
the list goes on....
Take my advice: count your losses and sell the damn thing ASAP.

I found once the head was skimmed and everything done properly the engine
was very good. The biggest problem I had was Heaps of rust, so much in
fact we ditched the car. Also the door have a habbit of closing and then
not opening without lots of hassel.

And on the other hand, I had a 82 Camira with 220,000 on the clock, had to
replace the clutch when I bought it, and when I got rid of it, CV's were
starting to go. Nothing apart from oil changes etc etc

Camiras ARE a problem!
I had one for about a year, in that time the brakes failed twice, just
about every hose burst open over time, the carby gave up the ghost,
the front drivers seat collapsed, the windscreen leaked, two door
locks broke, the flywheel fell off, the power stearing pump blew up,
the muffler fell off, the dizzy stopped working, the roof interior
started to cave in, and the auto transmission started to go weird
(near the end it started to "hunt" gears).
No other car I've had since has ever broken down (touch wood), or
exhibited problems (96 Falcon, 87 Camry, 91 Liberty RS)

I had an '88 (JE) Camira Wagon - the 2L model. Auto as well (ugh). Actually I
didn't have too many problems with it at all. In fact the only thing that ever
went wrong that I couldn't fix myself was when i had to get the brakes done
(that was just basically wear). Other than that, the most expensive repair was
replacing the cap, rotor and leads soon after i got the car at a cost of about
$80. Drove Canberra-Adelaide return 5 times during the time I had it without
missing a beat. Actually did Adelaide-Canberra in 11 3/4hrs once in that car.
Can't say I miss it though, I much prefer driving my R32 Skyline :o)

I thought the last series (JE) were supposed to be pretty fkn good. All
the probs are supposed to have been ironed out, and it has a 2L
multi-point EFI engine good for a high 16-sec quarter mile. Zoom (when it
kicked ass before) had a running series on doing up a JE Camira. IIRC
they got about 105kW out of it with minimal head, cam, airbox and exhaust
work; good for a low 16 I think.
'87 should be a JE, so u should be OK. It's just the earlier ones which
are either gutless or fell apart (carbied JB's being the worst). Hope u
got a manual :)
Cheers,
Ian.
