CRAP !
I went to have a crack at fixing my water pump today and I couldn't get the
bloody belt off! Bloody fords, give me back a holden any day :-)
I've only had the car a week so I haven't had a chance to get a manual for
it yet. There's a socket thingy on the tensioner pulley system which a
ratchet fits straight into. It's rock solid though and I've forced it about
as hard as I'd like to without something breaking. There's a tag looking
thing it the top of the tensioner assembly. Does that need to be pushed in
or pulled out or something ?? I had a fiddle with everything I could find
but to no avail.

Throw me a fricken bone here :-)

Oh the evil consequences on going to the dark side! If Dr Evil was here
he would say
"Boil it in Magma". Get a knife and cut the belt off if all else fails.
:-)

No mmmmagma available. No knives either. I could always cut if off with a
"laser" :-)
Ah bugger it, I'll just cut it off, buy a bigger replacement belt and
tension it up with a supercharger :-))

The tensioner is spring loaded, and moves freely with the ratchet handle,
but it only moves just enough to get the belt off. If you're looking for the
thing to move a long way, it won't unless you break it. Just insert your
ratchet into to hole and move the pulley away from the belt so you can slide
the belt clear.

A word of warning about Falcon belt tensioners: Be gentle :)

They are a somewhat flimsy device if you're the heavy handed type, and the
bracket of the tensioner that holds the pulley can be bent fairly easy. If
it does bend, the belt will never run true and stay on the pulleys, and
you'll be up for a new tensioner mechanism.

They ain't cheap either...

Regards,
Noddy.

I tried that but it moved only about 1mm. Surely them must move more than
that ?? When I tried to force it in either direction all it did was rock the
engine around! hence my saying I didn't want to use any more force than
that.

Ummm, are you sure it's the tensioner your trying to move ?

Well I think so :-)
It's got the square ratchet socket in it's the only free pulley that's
adjustable.
Is it possible that it's frozen or something ?

Gee, when you posted the exact same message in ford forums, minus the ford
bashing, i couldnt help but notice your Signature..

"For 2 years I spouted I'd rather push my Holden than drive a Ford. One can
only push one's Holden for so long though!"

Could it be your attitute changes pending on your audience? Could you be any
more of a wannabe?

Yep, just covering all my bases. I hadn't got an answer here when I made
that post.

Hardly bashing, but when in rome do as the romans :-)

Yep, my holden was always breaking down. Ironically my ford broke down
within 2 days of my taking possession.

What ???

hadn't got an answer here when I made
that post.

Not really. I'm still a holden fan as I always have been. I recently brought
a new car but due to the limited time and money I had available I opted for
the ford equilavent over the holden. I'd have prefered the holden but now
I'm behind the wheel of a ford so it's best to get help from ford people.
I'd be a bit of a tosser (and would probably get little help as a result) if
I went on a ford forum and started talking shit about holdens. Likewise, you
don't go on a holiday to new zealand and complain about all the kiwis. You
can complain all you like when you're at home though :-)

Wannabe what ???

Sorry about the double post. My news server is playing up. I thought I'd
lost the first one and the 2nd one is a bit different when I retyped it.

Sounds like it is. It's the only item around there that has a square hole
that you can fit a ratchet handle into....

> Is it possible that it's frozen or something ?

It's a possibility, but I've never seen it before.

Try giving the pivot mechanism a few small whacks with a hammer (nothing
brutal) to try to crack it free, or spray some penetrene on it to lube it up
a bit. Remember, it only *just* moves enough to skip the belt free of the
idler pulley, so don't go trying to make it move a long way or you'll kill
it.

Regards,
Noddy.

Cheers Noddy, I think I'll just email you directly in future :-)

I was tied up today so it'll have to wait till next weekend now. After
closer inspection I can see the part that's supposed to move - it's got a
lug on it that wouldn't allow it to move more than about 10mm. It's not
budging at all though so it must be just stuck.

Cool.
