Anyone else have a problem with XF falcon door handles where they get
really stiff and you have to pull them all the way up really hard just
to get the door to open? I've heard it's really common and simple to
fix, but I'm not sure how.
Also the lock knob (i don't know the technical term - the bit you pull
up to unlock it) is real loose on another door. It doesn't make that
snapping noise when you lock it or unlock it. It just kind of loosely
sits in between locked and unlocked and when you pull it up it drops
back down a little so that when you open the door, it moves out about an
inch and then locks and you have to lift the lock knob all the way up
while opening it. It's a pain in the ass.

Thanks

With the lock knobs, try twisting it clockwise (i think) to tighten the
screw...when I had a XF, they came lose a bit, so I just tightened them
and it was fixed.
Not sure about the door handles, maybe they're just getting old

typical, Ford wouldn't know how to build a car properly if it bit them
on the arse first then told them how to do it, they'd still screw it
up...and morons pay how much for one of these boat anchors?

As far as I know all Ford doorhandles from XA through to XF suffered from
those kind of problems. It wasn't until they spent something like $4,000,000
(I think that's the correct figure?) on new doorhandles for the EA that they
fixed it. Time will tell, I guess. Any EA owners like to comment?

Hmmm, the little *metal* finger on the inside of the die cast door handle
broke on my XF. Everything else was fine, not much plastic bits inside the
door anyway. New handle was something like $10 from Ford.

Had a bit to do with these. If it needs a big pull, it is probably worn or
stiff - or a combination. Oil and clean first as another reader suggested.
Then, the linkage that connects to the handle... try putting a bit more
bend in it - effectiveluy shortening it.
If all your locks are clean and adjusted and you are still having grief..
you may be close to requiring a new doorhandle (about 10-15 bucks each). If
you look after these doors, they usually last well. I have a 1980 XD,
which has NO sagging doors, locks all work beautifully and has never had a
broken door handle. I think a lot of people tend to give them a flogging or
slam the doors too much. hope this helps.

EA on don't have any problems with the door handles and they are made of
plastic. Problem is with the lock mechanism or the doors are sagging.
XG/H utes use the same handles as XD-XF but use the EA lock and they have
far less problems.

In my case, it was due to the doors sagging on worn hinges. You end
up using the handle to lift the door a few mm so the catch disengages
properly. Remove the splash guard from inside the front wheel well,
and you can get at the bolts that hold the hinges to the bodyshell.
Loosen 'em off a bit, make sure the door adjustment is right, tighten
'em back up, and see if that helps.

Yep, 10 y/old EA and door handles are perfect, way better than
previous efforts on the Falcon.

Oiling them helps, but I found that giving them a dollop of grease on
all the moving joints inside the door really makes them feel smooth
again.. also, on the XB/C handles at least, you can adjust them so
that they operate without much travel, combined with a good greasing,
they will last for ages, i'd be surprised if the XD/F handles don't
have a similar adjustment.

turns out the lock knob prob is a faulty spring somewhere between the
handle, the rod and the lock mechanism. Ford have the new part listed as
$180 but no longer make them. Ended up finding one from a wrecker's for $25.

You can get aftermarket handles for most older falcons ie xd-xf and cortinas
(baby falcons) for about $40-50 bucks as I recall. Got some for a Cortina
once and wondered why I hadn't done it sooner instead of putting up with the
old ones. I know how he feels, it shits you to tears.

The spring is on the the internal lock mechanism. One all the rods go to.
And Ford still make it. P/N - XDF220A44B for R/H and XDF220A45B for
L/H.They retail for about $25-$30 new.

Best Idea is to remove the pins after filing off the top, and replacing
the shitty nylon bushes. they cost only a few cents each and take about
20 minutes each door to replace. Only do 1 hinge at a time and replace
the pins from the top so they don't fall out. It worked in my car.
