Hi all, please don't bash me I no we only just finished talking about this,
but as usual you don't take much notice and then someone actually asks you
about the topic.

My parents have a 1987 2.4 diesel Hilux twin cab, and they want to put a new
engine in the old beasty.

What do people recommend, they want to stay with the diesel, but hope for
more power and speed, but don't really want to stuff around with changing
gear boxes etc, mainly for cost reasons.

What engines are available?

Whats the average cost?

Whats involved?

Thanks in advance.

Toyota Hilux LN65, 4.556 ratio diffs(bloody strong diffs), G52 gearbox, and
2L series motor

The Hilux (2L) 2.4Diesel is still a great solid motor, I rate it as one of
the best diesel engines ever to be produced by Toyota. It has a single
overhead cam, with adjustable roller rockers, not the stupid shims!
It produces 61kw, and 162Nm Torque, is a high reving diesel!

Basically it comes down to what they want to achieve, if it's top end speed,
acceleration, and more pulling power, then go for a 2.8Diesel (3L)
transplant, which is a much better investment then a turbo on a 2.4 (Not
much performance gain for bucks)
Add another $2500, and you can attach a garret T25 watercooled turbo, with a
modified exhaust, you should increase power up to appox 90-95kw
You can upgrade to a 2.8 litre diesel, with very little modification,
basically only wiring!

If they don't want to spend $2500-$5000, then tell them to stick with the
2.4, and mod it up!
Headers and exhaust sytem make a big difference!
If it's more top end speed, then the only real option is a bigger donk!

If they want the vehicle to have better acceleration, and to handle hills a
bit better, then they'll have to change the diff ratio's from 4.556/1 to
4.875/1, this will also make a big difference. approx change over
$200-$400/pair!

Any other info, just email, I have all the factory manuals!

You could try looking into a "Import" engine. e.g. 1kz-te from a Surf, lt
should not be much of a deal to bolt up to the existing equipment. Lots of
power and Torque. In 4wd Trader there are lots of places that sell these
engines.

Unfortunately it is a big deal. The electric's are a nightmare. There are a
couple of versions out there and identifying which you have can be difficult.
THe gearbox has to be swapped as well because the clutch plate is 2" larger in
diameter. The clutch is a two piece design that cost's about $1K to change.
You can do a conversion to a standard clutch.

If an engine swap is what someone wants to do then my recommendation is to go
for a 5L (3 Litre) and if you want a little more poke put a turbo on it. The
non EFI type that was in the earlier new Hilux's. Newer non turbo 3 litters
have EFI as well as the Turbo models.

Rebuilding the 2.4D (2L) is not a bad idea either and a turbo will certainly
help it heaps as well.

It all comes down to personal preferences and what you are willing to spend.

For $2500-$3000 you should be able to get hold of a 2LT(2.4litre turbo)
import engine
they have more power than the standard 3L(2.8 litre) and will give your
Hilux better acceleration than a 4.2litre HZ75 or HZ80 Diesel
Landcruiser

it will bolt straight up to your gearbox, the only thing you will need
to change is the sump
everything else will fit

a 3B (3.4litre) engine out of a Toyota Dyna, Coaster Bus, Daihatsu Delta
truck will also fit but you will need an Alloy(must be the Alloy
version) bellhousing from the same vehicle which needs to be redrilled
to fit the gearbox and you need to modify the engine mounts

this engine has plenty of low down torque as it is used in 3-4 tonne
trucks

but as you said you don't want to suff about too much
