Pajero 4WD blinking lights ?

Hi to all

I have a sick Pajero NJ 92 SWB;
On the Pajero dash between the revs & speedo there are a set of lights
indicating 4 wheel drive mode, When I disengage 4WD to 2WD the front set of
lights are still blinking, I jacked up the front end and the front wheels
are "free wheeling" this has happened to me twice once when it was very hot
and I had the fan running high and yesterday when I went "off-road" both
times the lights stopped blinking after about 15-30 mins and now they just
come back on again, The only thing that I did was fit a set of 31x10.5R15
cooper ST tyres, I tried driving forward and backwards but lights still
blinking, Any one out there having the same problem or know want is causing
it ?

the transmission confirms to the electronics that the mode shift is completed.

I've had this blinking all the time thing on my 98 LWD GLS. I don't know what
caused it, or why it stopped. The useless mechanics at the Mitsubishi dealer
couldn;t tell me either.

Maybe you should look at having your front diff services {oil change, deal
change etc} and see if that helps.

Other than that, try to find a mechanic who actually knows what he's doing
{I.E. Not the Mitsubishi dealer}, and ask him to check.

I had an identical problem with a 12 month old Challenger.
After many trips back to the dealer and having them spending more than 24
hours combined workshop time trying to diagnose the problem, Mitsubishi
Japan conceded defeat and replaced the transfer case with a brand new one.
In many of the lead up stories before having my TF case replaced, I was told
the 2H to 4H is an electrical operation and sometimes the servo unit does
not fully engage. Prior to my TF case packing it in and engaging 4WD all by
itself whenever it felt like it, the most annoying feature was that bloody
flashing light in the dash. A business card stratigically placed solved
that. Seems to be an ongoing saga with Mitsubishi's and a bit like herpes
(once ya got it, you'll always have it).
Good luck with trying to solve the problem though. The Mitsubishi Club of
NSW (Triple Diamond Cub) were great in helping me try and diagnose the
faults which were inconsistant and never happened when the dealer test drove
the car.
Bottom line, try and disconnect the wire and sell the bugger before it costs
you even bigger bucks.
My car is a fleet car and I believe that was the main reason Mitsubishi came
to the perty and had to fix it after some heated exchanges between Esanda
Fleet and Mitsubishi.

You will see this problem come up in the American SUV Montero Forum quite
often as well.
One possible solution and Dazza touched on it was fluid levels in the diffs
and transfer case.
My problem improved initially when Mitsubishi change my diff oils.
Another potential fix if your 4WD light begins to flash is to pull over and
select reverse, back back for a couple of metres then drive off again in
forward. This I was told by the dealer and it smetimes worked until my
transfer case condition worsened. Reversing the car had something to do with
diff wind up.
I had some technicians from Mitsubishi Japan look at my car when they were
out here and they still couldn't offer a cure in the end and replaced the TF
case instead. Another thing they looked for was if anything had been drilled
or screwed into the transmission hump, eg radios etc. Apparently this is
another source of problems with Mitsubishi when one of the wires is
accidently earthed or damaged.
