I have a Eureka tent (2 man) of similar design to the Clip Flashlight,
and a MacPac Microlight (1 man). I really like my Microlight, but if I
had to make the decision on either of them again, I'd choose a
free-standing design. Easier to pitch on hard ground and to move about
once pitched.

I also value the possibility for both my tents of pitching the fly and
inner separately, especially in NZ rain (Clip Flashlight can do this I
believe). Even more important than pitching it is breaking camp. Very
useful to drop the inner and pack and dress, get out, then bring down
the fly and stick it under the pack flap or whatever. I'd also want
that feature again.

For some examples see http://www.hikelight.com.au/category18_2.htm

Steve, I have a Microlight and am very happy with it, had to spend over
36 hours in it on High Moor(Western Arthurs ) a few weeks ago. Stood up
to the wind and rain very well. I think the only problem with
Microlight is that it doesnt have very good ventilation.
I also have a Wilderness Equipment First Arrow( for when I take my son)
It also a very good tent and does have good ventilation, and the
vestibule is very user friendly.

I would recommend either tent.

Good point. I have had a microlight one person tent. I have also
observed a few free-standing designed tents. Agree on features microlight
does not offer (not easy to pitch on hard ground/platform and to move
about once pitched.). One useful feature you missed out is the possibility
of cooking under the fly if rain (compact gaz stove and great care to be
taken). Not sure clipflash can do this.

It happened last weekend. Rained on Friday afternoon. Got worse while
trying to find a spot to pitch tent. Bit of animals dung was found near
tent sites.

I spent 36 hours in it on a platform on High Moor a few weeks ago.
Found It adequate but would have liked to have had a much larger tent.
Wouldn't have liked to have had to carry it to get there though.

Hi
I have a Salewa Micra - it is the version before the one they have on
sale now but I think they have improved on breathability in the new
one.

If I take it out of the packet, take only what I need (whole tent not
just the inner), poles and pegs, I can get the weight down to 1.7kg -
it is really spacious for that - not like the microlight (they remind
me of tents for bikes cos of the long thin vestibule).

I haven't had to survive a torrential downpour so I don't know how it
would go in that. Light rain - no worries. Wind - no worries.

When I have my son with me, I take the Macpac Apollo - much heavier but
can share the load - absolutely bullet proof. Have camped all over
Aussie in that. Great tent. I would trust Apollo with my life ( and
have....)

I see Fairy down are advertising a lightweight tent - I think that it
would be worth looking at - called the AXIOM. $399 and weighs 1.75k
all up. Not sure about quality and bullet proofness....but am guessing
no problems.

I checked out the MSR single shell tent (funny square looking thing
and you have to have walking poles that are long enough to hold it up -
watch out for that - many poles are too short) but it's reviews on the
American bushwalking site said there was a real problem with
condensation. Given my weekend up at Spicer's Gap last weekend, really
hot days, cold at night, condensation was a real issue so am glad for a
inner and outer tent set up.

I have had a Salewa Micra for three years and it has survived a few good
deluges with no probs. The weight is debatable, however. The official
figure is usually 1.9 kg, but the actual is believed to be nearer 2.3,
even with the mesh top. Still, this is not bad for a tent of its size
and durability. The Micra was also $329 when I bought it, which is
cheaper than some micro tents.

I own a macpac minaret and its been amazing. Been able to stand up to
extreme weather conditions in NZ, Tasmania and South America.

hi Ak

I am currently playing with a Big Sky Products Evolution 1P (just over
1 kg) and I am pretty happy with it. The Evolution 2P is its two
person cousin. You can read the reports on the 2P at
