Hi all,

I have made 3 trips (1 canoe, 1 walk and 1 lilo) to the colo many years ago
and thought I would revisit the area. I am keen to turn the trip into a
three day lilo lounge, the success of which I know can depend on the amount
of water in the river. Anyway, has anybody got ideas for the best access
and egress points. I know there is a little bridge upriver from the putty
bridge which is a pretty easy egress point. On the canoe trip that was our
start point. But where would be best to go in ... Canoe Creek or is that
too far? Are those fire trails reasonably accessible by four wheel drive so
that you can get fairly close to the river before hoofing it?

Thanks for any help.

Tony

I've entered the gorge at Alidade Hill/Canoe Creek and spent 3 days liloing
to Bob Turners Track a few summers ago. I think entering up at Wollemi Ck is
an option but there may be quicksand - others on the NG will fill you in.
The water levels at present are lowish - it's been pretty dry of late but I
reckon there'll be enough water to do the trip, just maybe slow at times.
I've been monitoring the river height since February but I haven't gone down
it enough times to know exactly what the levels mean to the liloer!

That's the Upper Colo Bridge.

I think it would take more than 3 days to lilo down from Canoe Creek
unless there is good flow.

Yes, you can drive to within about a kilometre of Canoe Creek on the
Grassy Hill fire trail. The steep track down to the creek is not sign
posted though. Make sure you have topo maps, compass, and a sketch map
showing where the track is.

My suggestion for a 3 day trip is Bob Turners track to Colo-Meroo
campground.

Bob Turners track is on the left a little way north of the Colo
Heights service station. Colo-Meroo campground is about 45 mins walk
from the end of the Upper Colo road. (This is a road which crosses
private property but walkers are permitted to use it according to the
NPWS).

Anthony

1.2m on the gauge is a good level for liloing (as a disclaimer though its
not necessarily safe)

It's base flow this last year seems to be 90 - 95 cm on the BoM level.
During floods in February and April this year, it peak around 2.5 m or more
and it took ~1.5 months to return to base flow.

Hi
I have liloed all of the Colo from Glen Davis, but sucess rate varies
depending on the water level.

There is not normally enough water above Wolgan-Capertee junction &
below Colo Meroo until you reach the tidal zone.
Canoe Ck - Bob Turners is a great 3 day trip depending on the levels.
Bob Turners - Colo takes 3 days but the water levels would normally be
too low to lilo.
If you watch the levels & wait for a good rain period then it can be
really worthwhile. You cant normally canoe from Upper Colo because its
too shallow. But I have done the trip after rain when there was a metre
under the upper Colo bridge & we had to duck as we went under.
Definitely more enjoyable than scraping the boat along the sand.

Hope this helps

Bronwyn

Haven't liloed the Colo for a very long time, but remember that there are
several rapids at various points that can cause concern according to river
height.....

I did it from Newnes to Angerowa (sp?) (I think). It was a walk the whole way
except where we put in the lilos just to use them because we'd brought them.

I would have said in high water that it would be suicidal or at least
lilo-tearing.

Apparently there sometimes is a mid level where it can be fun. I expect you'd
have to pick your time though.

Thanks everyone for the info provided. Sounds like Bob Turners to Camp
Meroo is the go. I notice on the maps there are three sets of rapids in
that bit. Does anyone know if it is easy to walk around them if they are
more torrid than desirable?

For Camp Meroo, Anthony says it is a 45 minute walk to get out to the road
over private land. That doesn't sound too strenuous. If time allows the
other option I suppose is to keep liloing to the Upper Colo Bridge. If I was
to leave a vehicle at the bridge and leave the option open, is it a long
walk from the end of Upper Colo Road to the bridge?

Thanks again.
Tony

Colo Meroo Picnic Ground, actually.

They are not that big - lilo over the top easily (albeit quickly).
Bypass? Easy. Well, medium easy. There was a bit of jungle around some
of the side creeks last I checked, when the river was up. No problem
unless you are clutching a lilo! Best maybe wade along the water's edge.
But most likely unnecessary down there.

It will be fairly slow liloing. Best done on a sunny day with lots of
time and lying peacefully on your back...
But if you do, it's a very easy walk, and you don't need to carry your
gear all the way. How long? Dunno - check the distance on the map.

There are more than 3 sets of rapids - probably 4 sets but depends a bit on
water levels. You shouldn't have any problem bypassing them. Harder if you
are hiking as the river gets deep around the rapids.
See
http://www.ozultimate.com/cgi-bin/bushwalking/walk.php?int_resource_id=196
for trip notes on a walk we did up that bit of the Colo. We went from Colo
Meroo to Tootie Ck (just downstream from Bob Turners).

Thanks - I'm working on upgrading the rest of the site (
http://www.ozultimate.com/bushwalking ) to a NSW bushwalking site, similar
to what the Australian Bushwalking and Camping Site was
(http://www.galactic.net.au/bushwalking) before it stopped being updated.
But it needs a fair bit more content.
cheers
