Say guys: When is the best time to inch your way up there.
Any good motel there to lodge overnight, with a great view to boot?
Thanks

Haven't had a lot of walking experience there.....but the California
Hotel at Katoomba is a great place to stay. And it has a great outlook
if the fog doesn't roll in.
But that happens at this time of year.
Personally, the mountains are at their best in cooler months.

If I had known life was going to be this good,
I would have done it sooner.

Now's a good time - cold (maybe snow) but often blue skies (and when
it's not so blue it's mostly not so cold). In the summer you need
shade - there are plenty of walks through the forests of course.
Wouldn't recommend the 6-foot track in high summer [1].

Um - anytime? It's just bloody beautiful.

What's your motel budget? There's a lovely place with top views up
there run by a swiss woman the name of which I could dredge out.
Megalong Lodge? Tad pricey though - again, I'd just got here & was
still translating into yen so it seemed pretty cheap :-?

You can do it without a car - the trains are good & you can use taxis
to & from the head, or bikes as we do - although the hills are killing
on the way *back* to the station. Katoomba's a good base with some
fine eateries & pubs.

(disclaimer: this based only on my experience which is of the last 6
months: 13 days/9 hikes - others here will no doubt correct me on some
points!)

[1] I'd just got here, I didn't know :-(

Actually, the best time to go is when other people think the weather is
bad, because then it isn't so crowded. I personally like Blackheath. Is
the track up to Govett's Leap open yet? (There were mudslides when we
were there the week after Easter). If it is open, Evan's Lookdown
through Bluegum Forest is a spectacular day walk.

There can be blastingly hot days in summer.
Usually the mountains are cool enough and
cooler than Sydney. Jan is the worst.
On the other side of the equation, in summer you
get 4hrs more daylight than in winter. The number
of hiking hours/day in winter is pretty short.
For me the number of daylight hours outweighs
occasional bouts of heat.

I used to live in Sydney and I've come back in Dec, and haven't
had too bad weather the last 2 years. I've had some
cool days in Dec too and been glad to get back to the
Blackheath bakery before it closes. I've also spent
some cold wet time on Leura station, waiting for the train
after a rainy hike.
(I'd also recommend the Leura Fish and Chip shop.)

If you don't have a car, I'd recommend a bike with wide tires (not
a road touring bike), which will rapidly get you out into the bush.

Hello Fran
its currently still not open. I was up there for the last two weekends
doing day walks from perry's lookdown to evans lookout and they where
"closed" both times
its actually not very bad and there was no signs to say it was closed
until we got to the NPWS shop at the top.

Oops - yes, you are right - it's PERRY'S Lookdown. My brain was not
engaged... (Evan's Lookout is the Grand Canyon walk - right?)
