It can surely seem like the above from time to time, but in the end it does
not really work out that way. The masses can only stand so much insult and
then they rebel. In a democracy based on republican principles (election by
popular vote where the politician represents us and speaks for us), society
will regularly renew itself to some extent. Such pessimism as you express
above has never been born out in American history, at least not over the
long haul.

On the other hand, democracy and elections are a fraud in most third world
countries. Without an educated citizenry and certain free social
institutions, nothing is possible except the world's oldest and most eternal
form of governance, that of oriental despotism. Iraq under Hussein is the
norm in most of the world. I despair of Afghanistan ever being anything but
a country of warlords and anarchy.

We Americans do not know how lucky we are to be living in a more or less
civilized society. It matters not whether you are rich or poor, we all
benefit enormously from civilization. The problem with the Muslims is that
they are living in the Middle ages and know not the benefits of
civilization. It is the age old problem of the Roman Empire versus the
barbarians.
