A new display hangar for the Museum of Australian Army Flying at the
Oakey Army Aviation Centre was officially opened today by the Minister
for Industry, Tourism and Resources and Federal Member for Groom, Ian
Macfarlane.
Mr Macfarlane represented the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister
for Defence, Teresa Gambaro at the official opening.
"This $1.7M project is a positive and tangible commitment by the
Commonwealth to both Defence heritage and local Darling Downs Tourism,"
said Ms Gambaro.
"With additional external funding from the aviation industry and other
sources, the Museum has great potential for further development into a
major tourist attraction within South-East Queensland.
"This new facility provides improved aircraft display areas, better
public access and improved Museum of Australian Army Flying access to
airside facilities such as runways and taxiways," said Mr Macfarlane.
"More importantly, this site affords great potential for further
expansion without detriment to core Defence business at Oakey."
The Museum's charter is to acquire, restore, maintain and display
aircraft, equipment, material and documents relating to Australian Army
Flying since its inception in 1912. The new hangar is now home to an
outstanding collection of military aircraft including a fully restored
Boomerang Fighter that was based at Oakey at the end of WWII.
