You are a recreational pilot and fly in Australia? Then I would be
very happy if you could tell me your opinion about an aviation-product
which I plan to sell in your lovely country.
It is a navigation/moving-map software for PDA (Windows PocketPC). It
is used instead of a mobile/handheld GPS.
Quite similar to the Garmin iQue, but much better (I think) because
- Any (existing) PDA with Windows PocketPC can be used.
- The original Australian VFR-Charts from Airservices Australia are
implemented. So you've got the same map in your GPS and on your knees.
- If available in Australia (I don't know yet) the Visual Approach
Chart of your destination aerodrome is automatically zoomed in when
approaching. Same with any more detailed maps like terminal charts.
In Germany we have 3 or 4 of these applications. All with nearly the
same features. One is called Flymap: http://www.flymap.de The
website is German but the screenshots will tell you everything.
The only software with the original Australian VFR-Charts I know is
"AirNav VFR" but this software is PC-based and not suitable for
PDA/PocketPC.
I've learned that it might be possible to use OziExplorer CE or Fugawi
with the charts from Airservices Australia but these aren't aviation
software so you only can "fly over the map" but no information about
airspace and so on. It is also not very easy to use this programs in
flight.
Why is there no Australian product? And what do you think about the
idea?
The software will cost about 250,- AUD plus the maps (same prices like
MapTrax http://www.maptrax.com.au/aeronauticalcharts/ ).
Thank you very much for your answers. And sorry for my English.
Oliver
http://www.pocketfms.com/ has Australian (and worldwide) airspace,
but its' data mostly comes from the USA NIMA and there are some
errors and ommissions.
The topological maps for Oz are somewhat sparse also.
Thanks!
Oliver
