Hi guys, can anyone tell me what is required to obtain a clearance from
Essendon Tower to do an orbit around the Melbourne CBD. I trained in
the bush for my recent PPL, but I now fly mostly from Moorabbin. What
do I need to request and do I need to have submitted a flight plan
prior to the flight.
Thanks
Paul

....but if you stay below 1500ft do you need a clearance?

looking at the melb vtc, the city itself is in controlled airspace so
yep, im thinking clearance would be required!

better make sure you got a transponder with mode c also

Why not just call Essendon tower, they're listed in the phone book, and
pre-arrange.
Tell them which way point you'll be entering from.

From Ken C. at Moorabbin Airport...

Having completed ~ 300+ Melb CBD orbits !!! From C152 to Piper Cheyenne.

Easy Peasy !!! Study the Melb VTC enlarged section. The Yarra River is
basically the Control Zone boundary.

Flight Plan or advance notice is not required. Essendon Tower control that
southern end of the CTR zone around the CBD. (Not Melb Radar 135.7 or Melb
Approach)

Approach Albert Park Lake from the South at 1500ft.

At APL southern end, with Transponder on 0100 Alt C, call Essendon Tower 125.1
and say;

"Essendon Tower - G'day - Warrior, Kilo Echo November, Albert Park Lake, 1500ft,
Request RH City Orbit at 1500 ft"

98% you will get it, sometimes kicked up to 2000ft due traffic. If not available
request left turn and holding over Port Phillip Bay until clerance available.
Readback assigned points and altitude.

You'll get a Clearance, usually with an end of orbit reporting point (either back
at APL or the MCG) As directed, track up towards Station Pier, Bolte Bridge (The
two tall vertical poles) in a gentleclockwise turn, and around the northern end
of the City, past Melb cemetary, and around to the MCG and APL. If you want to
go around again ask! Otherwise say Thanks and see ya later. Reset Tx to code
1200. Lookout for traffic, especially the nutter in the Cessna seaplane who
thinks he owns that part of the city.

At the start of the orbit, wave to the people in the Black Rialto Tower
(Melbourne Observation Deck) The high powered binoculars allow them to see right
into the aircraft. Girls, flash them your puppies if you wish .... Julie did !!

Listen all the time to En Tower on 125.1 during the orbit.

Have fun - we did Y2K 2000 at midnight doing city orbits.

Or see me in the Bar at RVAC at MB for more deatails !!

Yes. Controlled airspace extends all the way to the
surface. Presumably this excludes vehicles travelling on (or near) the
surface (commonly called cars,trucks,trains,trams,etc) ;-).

I recommend 1500ft.

If you fly (at? or) above 2000ft (see ERSA entry for Essendon) you are
no longer in Essendon Tower's airspace, and will need clearance from
Melbourne Radar instead.

(based on my understanding of the procedures as a PPL only).

I suspect obtaining a clearance to do orbits will be easier via
Essendon Tower, as they are use to this type of request.
