Hi, I'm wondeirng what subs people are running in their home theatre/hi-fi
systems and what are recommendations for subs in the $1500-$2500 range.

I've already tested out the M&K MX-125 (thanks Scott!) and the Velodyne
Ct-150 (which is substantially cheaper). Both are enjoyable, but its hard
to get a good comparison when they are sold at different retailers. I'd
like to audition the Krix Siesmix 5, as my speakers are Krix, but neither
of the two retailers in Perth stocks Krix's subs. I'd like an attractive
sub like the Krix, but it's price does seem over inflated, particlularly
given the specs indicate the sub rolls off at about 30Hz. Anyone have
this?

I had a mates car subs over my place, through which we plugged a HP
signal generater and
checked the SPL levels at frequencies between 100Hz -15 Hz. In some places
it had 15 Hz dips (the box for some reason wasn't ported), but it did
illustrate to us that for good HT, in order to shake the room, maintaining
good SPL down to 20Hz is warranted. I'm also naturally wanting low
distortion for the occasional music stuff.

Thanks,

Sean

I just ordered the new VAF LFE-07 sub. I haven't heard it but I hadn't
heard the DC-X & DC-6 either and they're awesome speakers, especially for
the money. Can't wait for it to arrive.
Frequency Range: 24Hz - 190Hz +/- 3dB (adjustable)
Output Level: > 100dB SPL
$1,564 Shipped
www.vaf.com.au for more info......good luck.

I have a Krix Seismix 5 and love it. It fits within your price range. I
suggest you listen to it before making a purchase - it is quite awesome. See

I now own a Klipsch KSW-15, it has a 15inch driver, 800watt amp, and I got
mine for $1300, but that's coz I know the guys where I got it from. It's a
killer sub, blow nearly anything away. Only sub I have heard louder and
lower is the sunfire sub, but at $4000ish no thanks

800W? sounds like an exaggerated spec. to me, but I could be wrong.

i was talking to the vaf guys, their lfe05 has an amp that looks the
same as the jaycar one, but aparently it has a beafed up amp section but
the crossover and stuff is the same, this is why vaf make their own for
the new models

One thing I've noticed is that many subs tend to make nasty noises such as
chuffing from the ports or mechanical sounds from the driver when pushed
even moderately 'hard' Can anyone recommend some brands which are very
'clean' as far as mechanical noise goes?

My friend has an M+K (is this the correct title?) sub. I think it's the 75
Watt version (1 12" driver, cost him $1000) and it has some protection
circuitry built in so it can be driven as hard as you like and it doesn't
distort or start to clip (no chuffing due to a sealed box).

Sealed subs generally haven't impressed me in the past as they've tended to
sound 'spongy' rather than 'punchy' Others will disagree, I'm sure.

That is one thing i've noticed with his system setup. I prefer a very
punchy bass, somewhat similar to a good car stereo setup, but my friend's
sub seems to be a little more boomy. I think it also has to do with his
room and the sub positioning (he has it facing a corner). He is running it
through a Yamaha amp and speakers (this was about $1000 for amp + 2 speakers
on discount, they are NS-50s i think). It is fairly well matched.

M&K makes some very nice subs. I have used everything from their VX-75 MK II
which is a 12" sealed sub with a built in 75watt amp, about $300 US. To their
high end MX-5000 sub, 400watt $2900.

They all have performed extremely well at their price point and I have never
heard any mechanical sounds or vibrations from the sub.

I have a M&K 75mkII and I find nothing "spongy" about its sound at all. In
fact, it was by far the most punchy sounding sub I tested in that price
range. It doesn't just rumble away in the corner like other subs and
integrates with my main speakers perfectly.

Ha, I nearly took mine out on the Olympics Opening Ceremony ;)

Not quite, but the experience wouldn't have been anywhere as good without
the Thor. ;)

I had a demo of the Hsu Research VTF-2 and it is very 'clean' as
far as mechanical and port noise goes.
Great sounding non boomy sub. I picked one up for $1500 and could not be
happier. You need to give it plenty of output from your low level sub
output as the amp is not very sensitive on its low level input.
It does clip but only if you want life destroying bass.
It is just so smooth and blends even with electrostatics which is how I
heard it demonstrated.
Read the reviews at the hsu site :
