I have some friends who have bought a Sansui SHT-10, and could not get it to
work, so they asked me to have a look at it. It was secondhand and came with
a rear projection TV.

What I need to know is, is there a decoder built in to the SHT-10, IE if I
feed in to the two channel input will it decode to the 5 channels.

I see there are connections for the 5 channels (Inputs) on the rear of the
Sansui, but neither the DVD that came with it nor the TV do not have these
outputs, hence I cannot use them, they only have 2 channel outlets.

Currently I am getting no sound out of the rear speakers, and the manual is
useless. There is sound coming from the centre, and two main speakers, as
well as the sub woofer.

These people are first time surround sound users and are tickled pink with
their system, so I do not need advice like "Get a better system" as
personally I am aware of its shortcomings.

Does it have a SPDIF connection on the back, and does the TV or the DVD
have the same connection. If so this will give you a form of 5.1

About the only other way is obtaining a DVD player with 5.1 outputs and
make a direct connection. And these units are getting cheaper all the time.

Some sound processors will convert and deliver a form of 5.1 from a stereo
feed
