Current system.
Receiver: Yamaha RX-V1 with outputs for A and\or B mains so doing
comparisons was very easy.
DVD: Toshiba ???? coax digital out
Speakers: Mains Bose Acoustomas 3, Centre Bose VCS10, rears Bose 601, Sub
Jamo 2010 (a very nice little sub BTW) and the effects speakers that came
with his Toshiba 65"WS TV.
Before we start into the "nitty gritty" Krix also has some funny ideas with
this speaker and tries to reproduce bass with two 5" bass drivers believing
they will add up to a 10" sound. Both the website and the man in shop says
this. So it will be an interesting comparison with two different speaker
manufactures both trying to get bass in different ways.
Now the fun begins, to do some comparisons. BTW I am not trying to do some
magazine article here or even pretend that I have any idea about testing
gear it is just some ramblings of some mug that played with some gear over a
weekend and is offering his opinion.
Testing material was Star Wars 1 (pod race ch20 and explosion during the
battle ch40) and Fleetwood Mac - The Dance - mostly the Tusk track to
compare bass response. Musically we used The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over
DTS. We tried this over a couple of days both sober and pissed. (Wholly
in the interests of doing valid testing I might add). We tried all sorts of
different combinations and set-ups, sub On\Off, mains only, phantom modes,
swapping centres (ended with the Krix Centrix at the rear and running 6.1)
etc.
Conclusion: Quite frankly there is not a lot in it. Bose cubes are "Hard
to Drive" and require a lot of power to get going so they were a little
quieter. The Krix are a lot more efficient (louder?) BUT actually had
slightly less bass but a slightly better mid range and did sound more
"musical". How did we finally get all this to sound quite good? Easy, got
very pissed, and had the whole lot going at once and just assailed ourselves
with a huge wall of sound.
My opinion: I wouldn't own either and still am firmly convinced you need a
big speaker driver to get a big sound ;-) BTW It is a very easy trap to
fall into with setting up a sub that you try and "over compensate" for the
mains lack of bass with toooooooooooo much sub and you can end up with a
very poor sound indeed.
Mate's opinion: Keep the Bose and save several grand. BTW wife's opinion
also concurs

Not having heard anything about Krix before I did take the opportunity to do
an evaluation. Everyone knows Bose and I thought some you may have been
interested in an "unbiased" off the cuff oppinion.
BTW I do prefer Maccas, at least they don't fall to pieces all over you ;-))
I am still waiting to get my hands on some Vafs as well. And an ME or two
or a Redgum and while we're at how about a nice big Halcro :-))
:)
