The website is at http://www.whatmough.com.au/audiolabs.htm, I've seen a few
reviews of their classic range but not of the cheaper AudioLabs/Magnum
range. As far as I can tell the biggest difference appears to be that these
are assembled in China where as the Classics and performance series are
assembled in Australia. the classics also are a wood veneer.
The M20s don't show on the website, they are a large bookshelf with a
substantially larger frequency response then the M10 (48hz-20khz vs
85hz-20khz).
I'm looking at $1300 for 2xM30 + 2xM20 speaker set as a package deal, by
them selfs at rrp they would be $1598.
I have been also looking at VAF DC7 / DC2 @ $1450 and Tannoy MX3M / MX1M @
~$1300 (can remember the exact figure)speakers, though the VAFs still need
to be assembled.
Has anyone got these speakers and how do they compare to other speakers in a
simular price range?
The difference between our Audiolabs and Classic Series is more than skin
deep. All components in the Vinyl clad Audiolabs are sourced in China, where
we manufacture them and the crossover uses high grade Elecrolytic Capacitors
and Air Cored inductors mounted on a circuit board with extra wide tracks.
The real wood veneer Classic series come from Melbourne as you pointed out
and use hard-wired crossovers with Solen Polypropylene capacitors and
Bass-mid drivers made to our specs by Audax of France.
Dont pay too much attention to specs, its far better to go with what you
like the sound of as specs only give half the story. In this case however
the specs pretty much reflect the result you will get. The M20 is alot more
speaker than the M10 for a bit more money. The M10 is much cuter and far
easier to wall mount. The choice is yours.
We are working on getting all the reviews onto our website at

This statement should have been qualified by Keith, by stating that
Whatmough advertise heavily in AVL, regularly donate sets of speakers
for competitions in AVL, and Colin Whatmough has his own column in
that mag. Stereo HiFi & Home Theatre Consumer Guide 2001 was produced
by the team at AVL.
I haven't seen reviews of their wares in other magazines for whatever
reason, so I'd take the awards with a pinch of salt and listen for
yourself. I've heard the P-30s and they are very nice, but haven't
heard the M series.

That fairly good praise, can't complain about that. I've already seen the
review of the classics in AVL which was very positive, but I haven't been
able to get hold of any mags containing reviews of the audiolabs series.

Basicaly the classic series are made of much better/expensive parts.

My general thoughts, the setup I was looking originaly had the M10s but I
decided I would prefer the rear speakers to have a little more bass. Space
is a concern, but not a huge problem.

They would be very handy, I know it's all about how they sound but it's
allways good to get a third-persons view on anything.

Given that I'm fairly new to HT and are no pro, here are my views on the
various speakers I tested (no flames please).
My budget was $1,300 for main and rear, center will come next time and
hopefully the sub.
I used a range of CDs and DVDs, my main deciders was Bond 007: Tomorrow
Never Dies and viewed chapter 10 (skiing) and a Fatboy Slim single (Bird of
Prey).
Vaf DC-7 / DC-1
--------------------------------
Sounded very good on music, Fatboy Slim sounded very good. Bond was not so
great, the explositions lacked any impact.
The speakers where also a bit above budget ($1,450) and they where not
willing to cut anything of the price even though they where selling the
speakers at rrp. The speakers also needed to be assembled (fairly easy).
Tannoy MX-3m / MX-2m
--------------------------------
Supprisingly simular to the Vaf speakers. Music was good, Fatboy slim was
superb. Movie was ok but not great.
These where on budget.
Whatmough M30 / M20
--------------------------------
Clasic music was very good, Fatboy slim was not as good as on the Tannoys or
the Vaf speakers but was still very good. The Bond DVD was much better.
These where also on budget.
