Just posted this reply in aus.hifi:
I posted about this a few weeks ago & got little response. I actually
bought one last week & have been very happy with it. I'm sure it has
some drawbacks that I cannot accurately describe (boomy? woolly? some
rattling at high volumes, especially during the opening scenes of
Baraka), but you cannot beat it at the price. It certainly shakes my 5m
x 4m room.
Note that the "100w" amp is described in the manual at "10% THD", so it
is probably 50W at <1% ??????? Anyone???
Manufactured by a HK/Chinese company; details at:

The reason I went ahead with it is that DSE have a 14-day full refund
policy, so you can try it risk free.
Regards,
Brett.
Thanks very much for your response, Brett.
I didn't know DSE had a 14 day refund policy, so I'll give it try. I might
even try to get one tomorrow at Highpoint. I want to use it with my PC but
thought it was too cheap, so thanks again.
For a PC you would probably find the 8" one perfect and they are a bargain
at the moment - only $88.
I have two of them - one for my PC and the other in the back of the car
powered by a small 12V invertor - aboombaboom!
I bought the 10" this morning and have just set it up. In my small computer
room (10' x 12') with four little B&W speakers and HT receiver it sounds
(feels?) great. The volume on the subwoofer is set at about 1/3 and it has
plenty of oomph. When the volume is pushed past half way it really starts to
break up, but fortunately I don't need that much power. It seems like a
reasonable match with the rest of the system.

DSE doesnt refund, they give store credits.
Yes they do... although I thought it was only seven days.
"14 DAY MONEY BACK SATISFACTION GUARANTEE. NO QUESTIONS ASKED."
Good to hear you are enjoying it Fred. I too notice the "breaking up"
(not sure if that's the correct term?) at high volumes. Is this caused
by the amp or the speaker?
Regards,
Brett.

Many years ago I made a transmission line subwoofer with two 12" drivers. It
was incredibly efficient and went down to a genuine 18Hz (@ -3db) but the
box was huge. That thing was capable of shaking every window in the house
when driven hard. I gave it to my brother-in-law (a musician) as I knew he
would appreciate it. He still has it. But making that sub taught me a lot
about usage, positioning and power requirements.
The "breaking up" of the DSE sub is mainly due to the speaker and its
enclosure. It's a bass reflex enclosure and at high volume levels the
speaker cone "gets all out of control". But if you're running it that hard
you have too much bass anyway. It's not meant to be used like that. Mine is
set at about one-third volume and sounds great. There's a lot of information
on the 'net about setting up subwoofers, so have a look around. This may
sound weird but if it's set up properly you shouldn't know it's there,
however as soon as you turn it off you'll notice it. Most people ask too
much of subwoofers and try cranking the volume way too high.
Cheers,
Fred
So do you class the 10" DSE sub good value for money?
Cheers

It's only $178. You can take it back within 14 days if you don't like it.
Yes, it's most definitely good value.
Cheers,
Fred
Know of any sites of the top of your head?

Is that an "in store" price?
Visiting their online store I still see the price of $178 for the 10"
sub.
I have just bought the 8" version for my home theater and couldn't be
happier. At one third volume you can feel it in your chest when properly
balanced with the other speakers.
Makes the Balrog scene in LOTR perfect!!
