To all potential customers: A warning to those wanting to purchase a home
air conditioning system in Sydney Australia.

NEVER use Echo Air Conditioning Pty Ltd (613 Tower Road Bankstown Airport,
NSW 2200) - email is ech...@bigpond.com .

My air conditioner went on the blink , at the start of January. It simply
would not turn on. We called the company who installed the Panasonic split
system, 5 years ago - Echo Air Conditioning Pty Ltd.

The service technician came out to my home, and told me that the split unit
had a faulty circuit board. He said he would have to return (in a week) with
two replacement boards, and added that one circuit board costs $200, while
the other is $600. He wasn't sure which one we would need.

He returned in a week, tried the new circuit boards, and then concluded that
the power supply was at fault. He said he would have to return in TWO WEEKS
because the part needed to be ordered... blah BLAH blah.

I told him to go stick his two week wait where the sun doesn't shine. Two
days after he left, I realised that the Fridge was off. I went around the
side of the house, and LO AND BEHOLD - the air conditioning and
refridgerator were running through the same safety switch. That means the
air-con was incorrectly plugged into an existing circuit - and the
refridgerator no less.

The technician had failed to flick the fuse switch back to ON before he
left, causing a loss of around 200 dollars in spoilt food.

After throwing out a couple of hundred dollars worth of food, I decided to
call another company to get my air conditioner looked at.

They came a few days later. After only minutes, I was told that the power
supply in the Air-con wasn't at fault, there was a burnt out plug and wiring
in the roof.

So, I called an electrician. He went up into the roof, that day, and
reconnected the air conditioning power directly to the circuit box.

Echo Air Conditioning had used a normal socket, which was up in the roof.
They cut the plug of the end of power cable which came with the air
conditioner, and wired up a normal 10-amp plug (like used for appliances).

Not only was the Air conditioner drawing power from a circuit shared with
the fridge, but the plug was not ample for level of current.

The elecrician brought the plug and socket down to show us. The plug was
completely black, with a hole right through it, where the plastic ignited.
The white socket was also blackened with soot.

Once the electrician attached the air conditioner directly to the circuit
board, the air conditioner worked.

So, all up - 1 month without an air conditioner, three service calls (138
dollars each), an electrician, PLUS 200 dollars worth of spoilt food.

THANKS TO Echo Air Conditioning Pty Ltd (613 Tower Road Bankstown Airport,
NSW 2200).

Echo Air Conditioning installed the air conditioning in my home incorrectly,
ignoring safety standards by attaching the unit to an existing circuit, and
cutting the plug off the end of the Air-conditioners power cord. None of
their staff acted in a proffesional or competent manner. Including Mr
Neville Page. Give him a holler - ech...@bigpond.com

Not to mention potential fire risk - life threatening! Makes one wonder how
many houses with A/C have gone up due to 'an electrical fault'?

There must be recourse through Fair trading to get your money back for
repair work that wasn't required, or you could sue with a threat to take
them to the Licensing Board...

Good luck!
My 2 flat rocks worth...

I assume quite a few residences have gone up in flames through similar
situations. EVERY time I see someone replace what should be a 15amp plug
with a standard 10amp plug, It always ends up in the same results. I am
thinking that it would nearly be safer to just grind down the extra off
the earth pin which would also be somewhat dangerous and illegal but
have seen it done many times.

Thought u might like to know the truth

Mr Tony Eagleton

132 Australias Street

Wattle Grove

NSW 2173

5th February 2004

Dear Sir

Following may attempts to contact you in person as well as access to your
premises denied by your son to enable us to advise you that your
installation of your Air Conditioner was installed by a licensed electrician
by the name of Geoff Owen Electrical.

On checking the electrical specification of the unit supplied and installed
by Echo Air Conditioning Model Number CS-CU1873KR has been designed by
Panasonic to be installed into a normal 10 amp supply circuit.

I have enclosed a technical specification sheet of the unit in question .I
have highlighted the following.

1. Running current 8.6AMPS cooling

Running current 7.8 AMPS heating

2. The unit is not supplied with a 10amp plug to enable the cable
supplied is to be cut to length so that a neat job can be carried out.

3. Your electrician should have checked the unit to see what the current
draw was for the unit and should have replaced the plug or the GPO which
ever was faulty.

4. It appears that the Electrician you employed is either dishonest or in
your words incompetent.

5. If he has rewired the unit back to the switch board then you have have
been charged for something that was not required.

6. The electrician was probably not aware that Panasonic have made this
particular unit to plug into a normal power point 10amp

After discussing with the service technician that was sent to your home I
conclude the following possibilities.

a. We were still able to read Voltage at the PC Board but because of a
badly burnt or loose connection within the plug in the roof or a faulty
GPO. This would give the symptoms of there being power to the unit and this
is why we ordered the PC Boards to help us in the diagnostics.

b. A plug or GPO can fail at any time intermittently through a bad
connection indicate power is available.

c. My only wish was to be able to fully explain the full set of
circumstances rather then putting into writing.

By emailing 540 people with incorrect information and slander about my
company leaves you very liable for litigation. I do not want you in any way
to feel that I am trying to threaten you as I only want you to have the
correct information

Yours Faithfully

Neville G. Page

To date, the MD of Echo Air Conditioning Pty Ltd has threatened to sue me on
two occasions for slander, after he was emailed by people who veiwed my
earlier posting.

A website www.notgoodenough.org has removed a copy of the post shown here,
"Shonky operators..." at my request. I have copies of all cancelation
requests to newsgroups. (didn't work on this occasion -oh well, shit
happens. It's hardly my fault the news server at Optusnet (my ISP) sucks.

The first time Neville (MD of Echo Air Con) threatened me he came to my
home, and stood at the front door ringing the bell continuously. When I shut
the door in his face, with his associate (standing behind the doorway)
yelled "We'll sue you - we'll sue you for 10's of thousands", as Neville
persisted to ring the doorbell over, and over, until opened the door,
listened to him, then closed the door when I had enough of his ranting
(about 30 seconds worth). Wherin, he started to yell out "I'll contact my
solicitor - come on mate - if you don't call me I'll put this over to my
solitor". These were his departing words. I walked down the bottom of my
driveway and casually gave the finger to the two vehicles these idiots
occupied, as they drove away from the front of my home.

I'm pretty sure I saw one of those cars, a white Mitsubishi Magna out the
front of my home for at least a half hour that afternoon. A large male sat
in this car with engine running making phone calls, just sitting there.

Harrassment. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. I warned these people away from the property
later that day. Yet one of them came back that afternoon, sat outside with
an engine running.

The second threat came in email format, as Neville Page stated the problem
was 'in the hands of his solicitor', ie; an ensuing slander suit.

Well I haven't heard shit from Neville since that day, or his solicitor.
Might be the copy of the email recieved from the administrator of
www.notgoodenough.org which said my posts were removed, and that I can't be
sued for publishing my gripe on www.notgoodenough.org .

So, basically, Neville can go and kiss my ass.

Threatening to sue and not doing so is itself a Tort (IIRC) known and is
unlawful. Get some legal advice.

Call the cops! You need to get these things documented.

Call the cops mate and make a complaint. Get an AVO as well. Let them
try and sue you, and then you bring out this AVO and the judge will say
'please explain'.

Sue him. He deserves it.
