I began handling and training human ponies in 1997.
The most essential gear is the bit. This is a bar held in the mouth by a strap. If it is in the proper place, it cannot be spat out. It gives the pony girl or pony boy a feeling they are being controlled when the handler pulls on the rings attached to either end of the bar.
One of the most commonly used bits is the "rubber pony training bit", easily obtained in any tack shop. Gag lovers often call it a "bar gag".
The first thing I train is "the tap out". This is a gesture to be used to indicate distress so great that the bit should be removed.
The tap out I train for is a sequence of taps on the ground with either "hoof". Repeatedly tapping either hoof gets my attention and the scene stops promptly.
In this kind of play, one has consent right up until the moment one does not have consent.
It is appropriate to play only with the consent of all involved.
In pony play, the key thing is the loss of humanity, the transformation from human to horse. "ponies do not talk" but they communicate richly.
