Our next Lunch & Learn is Wednesday February 4th from 11:30 am - 1 pm in the lobby of the Schupf Center in downtown Waterville. This is the building with the large glass windows bordering Castonguay Square and also the location of the Maine Film Center. We meet on the west side of the lobby where you can see Main Street on either the 1st or 2nd floor. After the meeting some folks may do a little birding nearby, so you may want to bring your binoculars, boots and hand warmers!
Next week we will look at Cornell Lab Bird Academy resources including Allaboutbirds, eBird, Merlin ID and other apps that folks are using. One of our participants has provided the following resources that we will explore:
I have been asked how to access the LycoBirds daily email quiz that several of us enjoy.
It is addicting so please don't say that I did not warn you!
Below is not a LycoBird Quiz But A Bird Migrant You May Have Recently Seen!
RAPTOR FAMILIES
Report January 28th Discussion
Although a cold winter day we had 9 people show-up for our discussion and 5 of us afterwards saw the movie H is for Hawk which had some amazing close-ups of a Goshawk. It so happened practicing raptor identification was our primary agenda. We began with a LycoBird video by Bobby and David Brown, The Intro to Raptors, identifying traits of the 5 major diurnal raptor families in the Northeast: Buteo hawks, Accipiter hawks, Falcons, Eagles, Vultures. This focused on their overall shapes, length of tail, pointed or rounded wings and some other prominent features. We next looked at LycoBirds 40 Photo Ultimate Raptor Quiz which points out several ID tips before revealing the species. I have included links to several LycoBird Raptor Videos of various lengths and one from the Badgerland Birding website that is 15 minutes and quite comprehensive:
