Snowy Owl in Readfield

Not great pics, and I couldn't believe my eyes, but a Snowy Owl landed in the field across the street from me about 30 mins ago on P Ridge Rd.  Don't they usually just hang around near the ocean?

Yes, definitely rare for Kennebec County. Thanks for passing this on Gayle. You're right, when they do show up, it's usually on the southern ME coast. There haven't been many there the last couple years, maybe this will be a bigger irruption year. I think this is the first one seen in Maine this fall.

In other birding news, American Coots aren't as rare, but there's a large group at the Cobbossee causeway at the south end of the lake. They're sometimes hard to find as they stick close to the aquatic vegetation, but there were 18 there yesterday afternoon.

Thanks for sharing.
This is a great reminder that the unexpected bird can happen anywhere.
So we should all keep our eyes open in our daily existence :)
