Hi All,

I started searching for two year old pre-school programs to send Livia to next September and found out many of the spots are already full for the 2014-2015 school year! The application dates, tours, etc., already came and went at several of the places I called... Some schools said this was due to volume of applicants this year, and others it's just how they do it.

What two year old/pre-school programs have you heard good things about? Has anyone signed up for one already? I know I missed many in my search!

Thank you.

The preschool application process in our neighborhood is bananas!  We went through it with our three-year-old and I'm hoping it will be easier with our second. :)  For my older son, we applied to Grace Church School (where he now goes), Brooklyn Heights Montessori, and Cobble Hill Playschool, but I've also heard good things about Open House, Brooklyn Heights Synagogue, Brooklyn Friends, and Plymouth Church.  Families First does Practically Preschool and there's the Brooklyn Forest School too.  I'm afraid a lot of the deadlines have passed, but I'm sure some of them have waitlists and our kiddos are considered too young for a lot of these twos programs anyway.  Good luck! -Susie

This is scary stuff!
I've also heard nice things about the Grace Church School, a neighbor's boy goes there.  But other than that, I honestly have not done much research, i guess the year flew by and I thought we were still in the clear!  Boy was I wrong :-(.

Thanks for the heads up Hannah!  Hopefully Livia and Dahlia will have a place to go, hehe.  If not, we'll start our own Co-op school!

You know, I really do think the cut-off for a lot of these programs would make our guys ineligible anyway...  My older son's birthday is at the end of June and the cut-off at his school for the twos program is July 31--so my little one, Benji, whose birthday is September 29, wouldn't be able to go next year anyway.  In some ways it's nice that they get an extra year before imposing the structure of school on them! -Susie

I have friends with kids at kane street kids, red hook play group, Casa Montessori and hands on world who have all been happy. Both of my boys are at Regina's which we have also all been very happy with. We've been through their their infant, pre school and now pre k programs (which are full days since it is also a day care).

I think family's first and NY kids club also do "pre school" classes for 2's  that could be an option.

Thank you Susie and Elizabeth for your insight and the names of some schools in the neighborhood! Susie, it does seem true our Aug/Sept babies are ineligible for a lot of 2s programs... the cut off at Open House and Brooklyn Heights Synagogue are June 1 and May 31. Day cares seem a lot more flexible!

Hi Hannah (and everyone else),

Sorry to chime in so late!  My son was at the Brooklyn Friends Family Center for their 2s and we loved it.  I don't know what their cut off is but worth checking out if you're OK with risking not getting in for 3s (the 2s is stand alone and does not guarantee entry into the main school's preschool which starts at 3).  I actually called Kane Street and Brooklyn Heights Synagogue for Eliana a few weeks ago in a sudden panic that I had been focusing so much on my son's schooling that I would miss the boat for her.  Kane Street's cut off is later than the others (sometime in September) but the director said that if we applied we would be very unlikely to get a spot because they don't like taking such young kids.  She said to apply for the following year.

Good luck everyone!  The school thing is really nutty but seems to work out for most people in the end...

Does anyone have feedback or comments about Preschool of America on Baltic btw Smith & Hoyt? All I know is that they are full time only, no part-time options...

Thanks mamas for all the lists and suggestions!

We love POA! Gwen has been there since she was 5 months old and it's been great. We love her teachers, the facility and the overall vibe. I feel like she is learning so much there!

We're considering POA too! I toured the facility once when it was just
opening before David was born (thinking I'd send him to daycare at 3
months old) and loved it but we ended up staying with our nanny. Now
that we have to figure out where he'll go at 2, POA seems like the
more affordable option than some of the other super expensive schools
around here. I'm going to tour it again in November to see what the
older kids do there.
