Hi all,

We've been using the Graco Snugride 35 car seat, but Gabriel is beginning to get a little too long for it. I've also just discovered that the straps don't extend out far enough with a thick sweater or jacket, which is incredibly frustrating. But this seat has been great for cab rides (it can be used with a seat belt) and when we visit family members who have cars (we don't have one).

Has anyone found a good car seat for toddlers, which is more portable than the typical seat that you just leave in the car?

I'd appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks so much..

I'm having the same issue! Been trying to research portable
convertible seats and the only one that looks portable is the Combi
Coccoro. Would love to hear of more options from people who don't have
cars.

Hello Tara,

I am going to go with the Chicco next fit because the reviews seem to indicate that this is the best option for kiddos who get longer before they get bigger (as mine tends to do).

She really likes it - she has two in fact (for her two kiddos).

Hope that helps.

I just bought two of the Diono Radian seats for my boys--Benji is still in his Graco Snugride for now, but I think he'll be ready to graduate soon.  The pros of the Diono are that it's very narrow (so you can potentially fit three across a backseat), its frame is made out of steel so it's safer, it has a cupholder, and it folds up for transporting.  The cons are that it's very heavy (24 lbs. I think!) and that it holds your child really upright so sleeping in it is a little less comfortable.  Good luck! -Susie

Hey Tara & moms!

Convertible car seats are awful and clunky and not meant to be transported. But ALL of them can install with a seat belt (still back-facing). I did a ton of research and landed on two ideas:

1. I bought (and have used several times) the Cosco (not to be confused with Costco) Scenera. It's 40 bucks (seriously) and 11 lbs. and consistently rated in Consumer Reports top 3 for safety (hence I felt OK about buying a $40 car seat). Basically it does the job: keeps your kid alive. But it's not cushy, so, if you're taking road trips, this probably isn't for you. For us it's about having one on the off chance we borrow a car or ride with (childless) friends somewhere. I wasn't gonna spend $300 on that. Otherwise...

We call car service and request a car seat for a 1-year old. They add like a dollar. We also do this to the airport and rent a car w/ a car seat on the other side.

Another option for serious travelers is one of these "stroller dollies". Links below!

Sorry — one more thing! If you play to fly at all w/ the baby after age two (and most convertible car seats last until age 4), then you have to take width into consideration! Coach seats are 18'' wide and many convertible seats are even wider! The Scenera I mentioned and Susie's too are under 18''.

But maybe Gabriel flies business class — then, no worries, haha.

Hi ladies,

We bought ... and then promptly returned, one of the Britax ones because it was huge and heavy and a no-go since we don't own a car but transport between grandparents' cars and car services.  We then bought the Combi Coccoro which we really like so far.  It's relatively light and really comfy.  We're going to be traveling for Thanksgiving and bought Colm his own seat so that was a consideration as well (everything I've read says the Combi is fine on planes).   The other thing  I really liked about it for traveling is that it's the only one that fits in the snap-n-go, and you can also buy a really cheap strap that allows it to clip to your luggage so you can roll it through the airport.  My only concern is that it seems like (since it's smaller/lighter), it has the potential to get cramped sooner than some of the other more grande ones, but for what we need right now it's great.

What great suggestions, thank you all!

But it's pricey, and gets somewhat mixed reviews. Some people can't get it to work without bruising their arms.

I think several of the options listed here might be better....
