Hellos mamas:

Hope everyone is well and surviving this snowy winter. Our kids are getting so big!

I'm wondering if anyone has had luck with teeth brushing. We'd love some tips. I'm having a lot of trouble getting Liv interested - she keeps refusing to do it herself or let me - shutting her mouth tightly and saying "no." I try to brush my own teeth in front of her and talk about how fun it is, etc. It will probably come around eventually, but if there's anything that helped you please let me know. She eats all kinds of food now and needs to clean those teeth!

Thank you so much!

Hannah

I would love to hear responses if they go directly to you! We're in the same boat- well, actually he like sucking on the brush but definitely no "brushing" going on!

thanks!

I'm not sure if it helps, but I've let Ryan brush my teeth a few times. I say, AHHH and open wide so that he can get in there and he thinks it's funny. So now when I say, AHHH open wide when i'm brushing his teeth, he tends to be a little more cooperative.

David is really obsessed with Elmo so I got him an Elmo toothbrush and toothpaste and he gets pretty excited about it. The actual brushing still needs work. He definitely sucks on the toothbrush more than any real brushing.

This was interesting: The American Dental Assoc. JUST reversed their ruling on toothpaste for tots — i.e. now a tiny bit of fluoride is recommended!

Out doctor was super nonchalant about the need for brushing pre-age 2 – we try to have him drink water before bed; and, yes, he loves his Cookie Monster (!) toothbrush, but, it's more of a hobby than a ritual right now.

Good luck, Hannah!

I just have to add:  how far we've come! from questions about breastfeeding to sleeping through the night, we've graduated to brushing teeth!

gwen for some reason enjoys brushing her teeth (if only she enjoyed diaper changes!). We do it after the bath. She's wrapped up in her towel and she sits on my lap on the toilet. I make the toothbrush for her and she lets me do her bottom teeth and top teeth. She does like to chew on it for a bit, and I allow that too. We first introduced the toothbrush after her bottle in the bedroom with just water on it. And we've slowly made our way into the bathroom. My mom was watching her for a few nights and she had her stand still on the bath mat for her brushing. She even allowed my mom to pull up her upper lip. (sometimes gwen does things for other people that she won't do for mommy and daddy).

it will all work out eventually. good luck!!

More of the same for Delfina. Lots of chewing. She sometimes let's me get in there for a quick brush.

A friend of mine also uses tooth wipes as an alternative before they are 2: http://www.diapers.com/p/my-dentists-choice-tooth-tissues-71464

We're going through something similar -- Gabe likes to "brush" himself which obviously isn't very effective. He basically sucks off the dab of toothpaste and then asks for more. I asked our pediatrician (at his recent 18-mos visit) for suggestions, and she said that quickly wiping them down with a wet cloth would be sufficient, at least for now.. I still try to get in there when he'll let me, but it's definitely a challenge!

Erik, who loves to chew on his regular toothbrush, also has a kids electric Thomas the train toothbrush that he loves and likes to keep in his mouth and spin on his teeth and tongue.  I figure it is probably cleaning something since the bristles spin on his teeth.

That said I usually lay him on my lap, hug him and gently tickle him (so he keeps his mouth open) in order to brush his teeth (with a regular toothbrush) every night and some mornings. He usually holds 1 or 2 additional tooth brushes in his hands and we alternate brushes. Sometimes he thinks its hilarious and sometimes he hates it.

Good luck!
