A neat connect-the-patches (like Quartz Composer) visual programming environment for designers:

Ok, it is based on Quartz Composer, I should really read through these things before I post J.

Question: Why are these things always built on top of Quartz Composer? It wouldn’t be hard to make such an interface from scratch.

A couple of reasons:

·       This was probably done by dev-minded designers vs. PL designers/implementers. When your focus is on solving a problems rather than designing new languages, a new language isn’t really on your radar.

·       QC was extensible enough to support the modifications they wanted to add (e.g. new patches can be defined in Javascript).

It is too bad Pierre-Olivier Latour is no longer at Apple. QC had so much potential, and I don’t think Apple is interested in releasing a full on VPL kit.

I suppose that’s true. These are designers who want to make a tool, not PL people who want to make a general purpose programming languages. Still, I wish QC style programming was build on a more accessible platform. Perhaps there is an opening for a general purpose node style system with pluggable blocks usable by any language.

What happened to Latour? What’s he working on now?

He is doing a startup.

There is always VVVV, but it is not as polished as QC.

the-graph aims to be a general purpose boxes-and-wires editor.

https://github.com/the-grid/the-graph/

http://flowhub.io is the IDE around it, and can communicate with backends written in different languages.
