Calling in the Gleaners (1859) Jules Breton     © Bridgeman Art Library / Musee d'Orsay, Paris, France / Giraudon Three features tell us that it’s dusk: the thin crescent moon in the top left-hand corner, the supervisor calling in the gleaners for the night, and the sun setting behind the trees, giving it the warm golden glow of late afternoon. Contrasting with Millet’s Gleaners, 1857 (Art of the Day, 28th May), Breton idealises the rural labourers: their postures are statuesque, their expressions are noble and there is an air of grace and poetry. This was a crowd pleaser at the 1859 Salon, and was bought by the one and only Napoléon Bonaparte.

The interplay of light and shadow on opaque and reflective surfaces is breathtaking. The star of the show is the twinkling glazed terracotta, offset by the cloudy eggs on the brink of opacity.
