Aged just nineteen when he painted this
work, Velázquez included every kitchen utensil under the sun to flaunt
his skills at depicting contrasting textures and materials. The
interplay of light and shadow on opaque and reflective surfaces is
breathtaking. The star of the show is the twinkling glazed terracotta,
offset by the cloudy eggs on the brink of opacity.
