Colleagues and friends of Audubon of Kansas,
I have the unfortunate news to bear that Tom Ewert, long-time Treasurer of AOK, and a longer-time friend to many of us, passed away today.
He suffered a medical episode last night, and was unresponsive by the time his ambulance arrived at the hospital. Efforts to revive him were sadly unsuccessful.
Tom was a joyous lister, and he invited several other Kansas birders on this trip to southern Ecuador in a quest to get to 600 birds seen in the country. Because 500 was too easy — and a tally he expected to, and did, blow past quickly on this, his fourth trip to the country. I am not sure what number he ultimately ticked, but he happily shared that on our last outing he “added quite a few birds to my list.”
His last several days were spent in a country he loved almost as much as his own, and pursuing a passion he carried across the globe. I hope that and our many memories of him will bring some comfort in the days ahead for us all.
His family may be sharing more in the coming days, including plans for a memorial service. We will pass those along as we receive them.
Godspeed, Tom.
