I just downloaded AudioTool on my Galaxy S20 FE and when I try to open the app I get the following message "AudioTool cannot run without Record Audio and External Storage.." and the app immediately shuts down. How do I fix this?

Hi Robert,

Sorry about this - I'm seeing some similar reports, but not everyone is affected. I'm investigating.

Downloaded Audiotool today, and get this same error on both Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and Pixel 7 Pro. When the app launches the first time, it requests microphone permission, but not storage. Also, there are no denied permissions listed in the App info.

Thanks for these reports.

From Android 11 onwards the use of the old method of storing files on the phone was deprecated, and AudioTool was living on borrowed time :-) Now in Android 13 it has finally been removed completely (part of security concerns over Apps being able to write anywhere other than their own space): so a new method is required. This new method works in the AudioTool dev version, but there is an unfortunate side effect: the "AudioTool" directory is now in a different place in storage on the device.

For most users this may well not matter, but for users who have stored data (RTA files, etc.) from prior AudioTool versions they want to access, or have e.g. Dayton .cal files they want to use, then they will need to copy or move those files into the new AudioTool directory location themselves. (AudioTool can't make this automatic, as it has no access to files outside its own space, as per the new file storage rules.)

I just bought and installed the app today and am having the same problem. The app asks for media permission but not for file permission and therefore can neither write nor read (same "Cannot read from storage" and "Cannot write to storage"). I also have no idea where the directory is, so I'm a little flummoxed as to how to load a calibration for my Dayton mic. Where can I access the dev version of AudioTool?

Version 8.5.0 is now rolling out, and should fix this problem. (Thanks to users who tested this for me!)

The location of the AudioTool directory has had to be changed. I realise that this is inconvenient for some users, but the new Android security restrictions made it necessary to do.

Instructions for migrating your existing files (data, cal files etc.) are here. This basically involves copy/paste from the old directory to the new.

I'm seeing the same problem (cannot read/write from/to storage) on Android 13 (installed Audiotool version is 8.4.3), but checked just now for updates on the Play Store, and no update is found.

Hi Nick,

The update is rolled out slowly by percentage. I just set it to 100%, so you should be able to get the update soon!
