Hello,

I have the following problem with AudioTool:
If I choose Main Mic the built in Mic is active and I have to choose Front Mic to activate the external imm-6. The problem is that in Front Mic Setting there is a cut off at 8 kHz. I tested on two different devices: Lenovo 2A7 10F Tablet and on Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. On both devices I have the same behavior.
Then I tested other apps (Spectrum Analyze, RTA Audio Analyzer etc.) These apps automatically use the imm-6 without a cutoff at 8 kHz.
Is there a solution to solve this problem?

Greetings

Andreas

That's an annoying problem! A coupl of questions:
1) How do you know that the internal mic is active instead of the plugged in iMM6, when you have Main Mic selected? I would expect the phone to use Main Mic for an external connected mic.
2) Do the other apps allow you to choose which of Front/Main is used? If so, are you specifying Main when the iMM6 is inserted?

Thanks,
Julian

-> scratch with the fingertip on the mic - only the active mic gives a response in the app

2) Do the other apps allow you to choose which of Front/Main is used?
-> No, there is no setting for that

Thanks for the fast reply!

OK, this is very odd, and I'm baffled. If the other apps do not allow you to choose between Main and Front mic, then they must be using the default, which is Main. In that case, you wouldn't expect the iMM-6 to be in use, based on the evidence that the Main setting continues to use the internal mic on these two devices, as AudioTool shows.

Is the 8kHz cutoff very sharp - is it as if the sampling rate has been reduced to 16kHz? Or does it look more like a low pass filter?

Do you start AudioTool and then insert the iMM-6, or the other way round?

Ok I tested a lot around to exactly find out whats wrong. And I first have to apologize for giving wrong information:
On both devices I have to switch to Front Mic (see screen shot) in order to use the iMM-6. Front Mic has the cut off with both, the internal and the external iMM-6. Main mic is without the cut off but uses the built in mic and not the iMM-6.

It does not make a difference if I first start the app and then insert the iMM-6 or the other way.

The other tool (RTA analyzer) automatically uses the iMM-6 if it is plugged in and has no setting for front or main mic nor has a cut off (see screen shot which sure uses the external mic).

Thanks for the update. I can only guess as to what may be causing this problem on these two devices: AudioTool uses the "voice recognition" stream from the mic, which is supposed to defeat any filters and AGC etc. that are often used for recording speech. The voice recognition stream is normally associated with the main mic, and I believe when an external mic is connected, the main mic on most devices will be bypassed, and the external mic is used instead, so you still get the defeated filters etc. on the external mic. However, perhaps on your devices, an external mic uses the "front" mic circuitry, without the defeated filters. This is just a guess. I can also only speculate why the other app appears to show a flatter response from the external mic - very curious!

I realise this isn't very helpful to you - if you contact me off-list with your order number I will process a refund, as AudioTool isn't doing what you want with your iMM-6.

Thank you for your explanation. Well, in fact your app more powerful as most other apps out there and the possibility to load the calibration file makes the app outstanding for me. I will have the possibility to test and compare the results of the iMM-6 and audiotool on my device in a sound laboratory in the next days or weeks. If the applied filters of my device only cut off everything beyond 8kHz I will keep the tool.

What do you think about an advanced setting for changing the used stream? If other tools get the right result (by pure chance?) it should be possible to find the correct configuration.

What I propose is that I send you a test version that changes the mic stream processing settings. If you could try it and let me know what you observe, perhaps it will suggest a solution.

Sorry for my late answer - a test version would be great. I will test it.
Thank you for your great service!

Andreas
