I am pleased to announce that AudioTool is now available for iPad/iPhone. The functionality is very close to the Android version 5.6.

Very cool, Julian.

One of my colleagues in Germany is very interested.  He will most likely be purchasing your Audiotool for iPhone.

Looks like IOS 6 is required so that rules out my original ipad which is stuck at 5.1.1

Thanks Myles and jemyers5. Yes, I targeted IOS 6, but I'm not sure why (!) - there's nothing in there that prevents it running on IOS 5. Probably for the next release I will target IOS 5.

It appears identical, however on my iPhone5 functions completely different from my Nexus7. When I initiate the app on the iPhone I get immediate feedback and have to turn the speaker all the way off. The Nexus functions as you would expect.

OTher than that, nice implementation. Thank you for a great app.

Hi Ron,

Yes, I am investigating that feedback effect, which is peculiar to the iPhone and iPad. It's not clear to me what is happening, as I don't transfer data from the mic input to the speaker at all, so there must be some internal mixing going on in the OS which I need to disable if possible.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Julian,

I installed this flavour of AudioTool on my iPod Touch 4G and have the same problem.  A less-than-convenient workaround is to switch to Generator mode and turn on "silence" -- the feedback goes away.  But this change is not "sticky" when the app is closed and reopened.

Another issue: in Spectrogram mode, the screen is written with a solid field of magenta--as if there is no signal.  Other modes appear to function properly.

Finally, I had calibration problems (as did another user), including the missing "minus sign."  I guess Apple has not managed to review and approve your app update yet?

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

That's very useful feedback - the fact that using silence cures the problem - I didn't think of trying that. This is a big clue as to what is going on internally.

Let me check the Spectrogram mode - it was working fine on my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 when I last looked.

For calibration - are you running v5.6.1? This version contains the fix for that, which should bring up a full keyboard (rather than just a phone number pad!) for entering the offset - and so allows a minus sign! v5.6.1 was approved and put in the store several weeks ago.

Just checked Apple store, version is given as 5.6, and also same in my iPhone/iPad.

Yes, I just checked too - for some reason version 5.6.1 (which I submitted on Dec 17, and which was positively reviewed and then marked Ready for Sale on Dec 24) has not yet gone live in the Apple Store. I've inquired why this might be and will let you know.

Dan, your excellent observation of using Silence in the generator allowed me to find a fix for the feedback problem. In my dev version I now just copy silence data (all zeroes) to the output when the generator is not in use. This works nicely. It turns out that Apple internally use the same buffer for the input samples as for the output samples, so unless the output samples are zeroed, one gets feedback.

For the magenta Spectrogram - what dB levels do you see in the RTA mode in a quiet environment? If you reduce the top end of the dB scale (via the Menu) do you see variation in the colours on the Spectrogram?

Julian,
The AudioTool sound level on the iPod Touch is 17-18dB higher than the sound level on my calibrated Galaxy S3 phone.  I can't calibrate the iPod until Apple posts v5.6.1.  The magenta Spectrogram does not change with adjusting the dB scale range (50 to 120 to 200).

I am also have the same problem with the Spectrogram mode, just a solid screen of magenta.  I am getting the audio feedback and have to turn down the volume.  I new problem started today with the entire screen going all white upon starting up, I exit the app and restart and its works fine until the next time I exit and reopen.  The calibration also seems to be off and I can't set it and have the calibration stay, the iPhone seems to want to read to 20 to 30 db hotter than the Galaxy. Is there anyway of changing the orientation like the Galaxy. Thanks, John

Hi John,

Which version of iOS are you running, and on which device?

For calibration, what value are you entering as offset for the single value method?

I just submitted to Apple a v5.6.2 that fixes the feedback issue - it should go live in a few days.

I'm still investigating the blank/magenta spectrogram issue - the trouble is that I don't see it on my iPad 1, iPad 2 or iPhone 4,
so it is difficult to debug.

For orientation, I need to look into how straightforward it is to allow other than portrait.

Thanks for the feedback.

I am using 6.0.1 on a 4gs and and 5.6 on audiotools. I used -16 on the offset, but the it reverts to the original setting when get out of calibration.

If you set the value "-16" in the Calibration dialog, Save it, and then go back in to the Calibration dialog a second time, what does the heading text say is the Current Value"?

Which microphone do you use on the iPhone in 5.6.2?

I believe it's the bottom one. I haven't yet found a way of programmatically selecting the mic, despite asking in the Apple dev forums.

Probably the best one to use would be the top one, right?

I would assume the bottom one is less sensitive, since its main use is as telephone mic close to mouth, but I'm just guessing.  I also assume the upper one is selected for speakerphone usage, therefore more sensitive, but again just a guess.  It apparently becomes more complicated for the iPhone 5 (mine is 4S), since they're advertising a mic in the back for noise cancellation.

Apple doesn't spell out this kind of stuff in their development kit info?  Makes it tough on programmers.

Hi,

Not in the current version, I'm afraid. The next version should support rotation.

Thanks for the question!

Hello - Will Audio Tool run in the background on IOS?  I would like to use AT to check room response with pink noise and do freq sweeps. I will be sending output to my mixer from headphone jack on the Dayton Audio's iMM-6. The control for my mixer also runs on the iPad, and I want to be able to swipe back and forth between AT and the mixer control app, while AT continues to produce pink noise or the sweep freqs. The mixer control app doesnt use the iPad audio, so should not conflict with AT, but I do need to run the mixer control app while AT is producing sound in the background. Is this possible? Thanks

AudioTool will not currently run in the background. I'll look into how easy it is to allow it to do so.

Hi,

Thanks for purchasing the Android AudioTool. The iPad/iPhone/iOS version is in fact a complete re-write in Objective-C of AudioTool (which is a Java application on Android), so it is not really the same application, and did take me quite some effort to implement. For that reason, I'm not offering it for free to Android AudioTool customers. I hope you understand.

I looked at this over the weekend. Are you using iAudioTool on an iPad or an iPhone? It menu orientation seems to be working correctly on the iPad, but not on the iPhone, as far as I can see?

Try starting AudioTool when you are in Portrait mode, and let me know if that makes a difference.

I think the problem is that when starting in Landscape mode, the code assumes you are in Portrait,
and all the rotations from then on are done on that basis.
