FAQ for AudioTool

1) Where is the AudioTool manual?
The online manual for AudioTool is here: https://sites.google.com/site/bofinit/audiotool

2) Have you got a calibration file for my Android phone?
I do not have the resources (hardware/time/skill/patience!) to calibrate Android phones. Many members of this Group are acoustics experts, and do have the necessary kit to do calibrations. The best hope of getting a calibration file for your phone is thus to Post in the Group asking for one.

3) Do I have to buy a new copy of AudioTool to put on my new Android phone?
No, your purchase of AudioTool allows you to download and install it on any Android phone that is associated with the Google account you used to make the purchase.

4) Can you add this really nifty feature (.....)?
Yes, probably, but I have to prioritize such requests. Usually, if someone else chimes in and says they'd also like the feature, and a) it doesn't conflict with other features, b) fits within the general scope of AudioTool, then I will add it to my "todo" list. Requests for incremental improvements to existing functions are much more likely to get implemented quickly.

5) AudioTool doesn't work on my device, or it doesn't meet my needs. Can I get a refund?
Absolutely - just contact me directly via email with your order details, and I'll gladly refund the cost quickly.

This is actually intended behaviour - the act of rotating the screen causes the App to be re-started in the operating system. It would be possible for AudioTool to save and restore state for rotation events, but it's quite tricky and not something I want to get into at the moment.

One obvious solution is to set the device into the orientation you need, then lock out rotation events in the OS Settings, then make your RT60 measurements.

Best wishes,
Julian

Well, I'd like to put my piece of bacon on the pan so to speak.  I'd like for audiotool to do two things: First would be Waterfall graphs/plots  and second email a measurement  that's wasn't generated by the internal signal generator. This would be sweet!!!!!

first, let me say I love this tool.

However this morning, for no apparent reason, the one 1/3 and 1/6 spectrum analyzer displays stoped working. The 1/1 octave continued working. How do I resolve this problem?

Yes, this appears to be a bug that is affecting some users. If you are experiencing this problem, please contact me directly.

Had you used v6 beforehand, without experiencing this problem, or is this the first time you'd used it since upgrading?

If you look at the code for this email address, it's obfuscated using javascript. I suspect this is a "feature" google provides to protect us poor innocents out here. Try separating each letter of the address by spaces or such- that will sometimes fool such methods and at least allow us to see the real address. If spaces don't work, try underscores or dashes or dots (assuming you don't have them in the actual address).

Hi,

Those are very high SPLs, and will likely clip the microphone input - the Mic display will turn red if that happens - and render the measurements inaccurate. The dynamic range of AudioTool is around 96dB (due to 16 bit sampling), and the built in default calibration offset shifts the range to 20-116dB. To attenuate the sound so that it falls into a measurable range would involve using an external mic and a pad. Or perhaps a suitable thickness of sound absorbing material taped over the microphone on the Kindle would also work?

Is there some way to calibrate Kindle fire hd by a simple download? Is the installed microphone adequate? My test range is between 100 and 140db. No matter the spl I am sampling, it tops out at about 112db. Is this a microphone limitation? AWESOME APP by the way.

A couple questions for you -

1.  Will latest updates get pushed to Amazon App store eventually?

2. I happened on recent paper comparing available apps - http://scitation.aip.org/content/asa/journal/jasa/135/4/10.1121/1.4865269 but didn't see AudioTool mentioned - do you have a sense for how it compares?

Thanks!

Thanks for the questions :-)

1. I have tried several times now to get the latest version into Amazon, but they seem to be changing the app submission rules, and complaining about permissions, as if they have changed since the version currently available there, which they have not. I need to follow up with someone in Amazon, but haven't got around to it yet.

2. I am very puzzled why they didn't evaluate AudioTool, either on iOS or Android. It appears to be an oversight on their part, although it's possible it didn't meet some of their selection criteria. I cannot say how AudioTool might have fared if it had been included, but there is no magic ... It's strongly dependent on the 'phone, more than the app, I would say.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I did purchase it through Amazon, it's still a semi-recent version.  That is frustrating if they are changing the rules.  On the NIOSH paper, I would guess it is an oversight, as AudioTool certainly looks to have all the features that would've qualified the app, and more than any of the ones they did review.  At any rate, their conclusion for Android seemed to be that since there are so many different phones, you really don't know what hardware you're getting, so results may vary.

Does anyone out there have a calibration file for Moto X?

Thanks!

Updates can be automatic or manual ... I think there is a setting somewhere to specify which you prefer.

If you go to the Play store and find AudioTool, it should tell you whether there is an update available or if you have the latest version.

Thanks for the feedback!

I like to know what exactly I have to calibrate. My device microphone? I understand that by default is set to 0 db, meaning that there is not any range +/- in the measure. I understand that I need an external SPL measure to calibrate my device? If the measure in any room in the frequency of 500hz is 50 db, I have to set that frequency to that level by writing +/- the diferencial between the measure and whatever my device read? Please explain as clear as you can. Thank you very much.

I use Xoom

Hi Juan,

Yes, I think you have understood very well. For the simple calibration, just measure the SPL using AudioTool, at the same time as measuring with an external meter. If the meter reads M, and AudioTool reads A, then enter the calibration constant as M-A. So, 50dB measured by external tool, 49dB measured by AudioTool, use 1dB as the AudioTool calibration. You should then see that AudioTool matches the external meter.

You can get a better calibration by using the 1/3 octave cal feature, if required.

I was doing some calibrations on my Galaxy S5 today and went about this by playing pink noise through the headphone jack to my stereo. I had the phone mic roughly one foot away from the main speaker and adjusted till all sliders are flat. Is this the recommended way or am I missing something? I would like to get it as accurate as possible with what I have.

That's a decent method, but it depends on how good/flat the mic and phone response is. If they are not, then you could be boosting noise. How far did you need to adjust the sliders?

Can you make the program save the options that are used. For instance, I use peak hold exclusively and most of the time use slow as the speed. Every time I close the program out and use it again at a later date, I have to select those items again to get them to be back to that way. It would be awesome if they stayed that way until they are changed manually.

Hi Adam,

Nearly all the options are saved between runs, so I'm puzzled. As soon as an option like Slow speed is selected it will stay that way even if you exit out of the app and start it again.

Which version of AudioTool are you using?

Dear Julian,
I have just purchased AudioTool for making some audio response measurements using a Dayton Audio iMM-6 Microphone. However, I am experiencing some unexpected behavior: when using the external microphone ("Use main mic" setting), the RTA frequency response appears to be limited at about 8KHz. I initially thought that this might have been due to a fault of the microphone or hardware limitation of the phone I was using: so I swapped microphone and tried another phone, with no difference. Note that if I select "Use front mic" on the menu, then the RTA frequency response extends to 20KHz, as expected, but that is using the built in microphone, not the calibrated iMM6. Clearing the calibration file does not make a difference. As a final verification I installed Spectroid and, voilà, the frequency response with the external microphone goes up to 20KHz, as expected. so, is this a bug or there is some setting that escaped me ? Many Thanks for your reply. Carlo

Hi Carlo,

Sorry to hear of this problem.

What does the AudioTool Mic display show as the sample rate and sample size when you are running?

How are you testing which microphone is actually being used when you switch between Main and Front microphones?

Which microphone is Spectroid using - the "Front" or the Main? Does Spectroid give you that information?

The problem is almost certainly related to the hardware audio, but it is not impossible there is a bug in AudioTool :-)

I see nothing wrong in the output you sent from AudioCaps.

Julian

Hi Julian,

-1) Mic Display: 44100 4096 dF=10Hz C=1/3oct 0=0.0

-2) I have plugged a pair of earbuds in the by-pass socket provided on the iMM-6 microphone. I activate the signal generator and position one of the earbuds in correspondance of the microfone I want to test.

-3) I think Spectroid is using "Main". In practice this corresponds to the built-in microphone when nothing else is connected and to the external one, when present.

-4) In Spectroid there are various options concerning the audio source. I normally select "Microphone", but even chosing "Default" works OK.

I hope this could help pinpointing the issue.

Regards

Carlo

Hi Carlo,

Thanks for the details. I'm afraid I have no idea what may be problem here. The code is not device specific, and just uses the Android SDK's method for selecting the microphone - there is no adjustment of sample rate made depending on which microphone is in use. Unsurprisingly, I cannot replicate the behaviour on my Android devices, so it's hard to debug what is going on! My feeling is that there is something strange being done by the phone's firmware, although why it doesn't do the same for Spectroid, I have no idea.

Sorry about this - if you would like a refund, please let me know.

Julian

Hello
How can i calculate RT60 in each frequency
I see RT60 table that show values but it
Involve early 0-10 and 5-20
What mean this numbers?

AudioTool calculates several RT60 measures, which are shown in the results table:

1) A broadband (all frequencies) measurement
2) A measurement for each of the ten octaves (so, frequency dependent)

There are two methods for calculating the RT60: the so-called "Early", which is based on the time for the SPL to drop from the peak by 10dB (the "0-10"), and another which is based on the time for the SPL to drop from 5dB beneath the peak to 20dB beneath (the "5-20").

I hope this help!

I've done some RT60 measurements and stored them. When I then try to load them at a later date the files don't appear in the list of files presented.
The file are on my device and have the extension .RT60. How do I read them?

Hi John,

Are you in RT60 mode when you try to load the files? You need to be in that mode.

Let me know if that's not the problem.

Hi Julien,
Thanks for your reply. If I change to RT60 mode and the files appear in the list but if I then select one of these files to load  it still doesn't show because the program is still waiting for a clap etc.

Yes, you need to first make a measurement, so that the table becomes visible, and then Load the RT60 file, which will then show the file's values in the table. It's not an ideal user interface, I agree :-)

You have packed an enormous array of features into this app. I should have followed the adage "if all else fails read the instructions". The manual is very clear. I just didn't take the time to read it carefully enough. Sorry about that.
In the end I simply renamed the file with a .csv at the end instead of .rt60 and then opened it in Excel. The data was shown in a very orderly and clearly readable way. Thank-you for taking the time to answer my questions and congratulations on a truly useful app.
I have a feature request but I'll make that the subject of a separate post.

Yes, this appears to be a bug that is affecting some users. If you are experiencing this problem, please contact me directly.

Had you used v6 beforehand, without experiencing this problem, or is this the first time you'd used it since upgrading?
